Welcome to Rainbow Valley

Tree Stocking

 

A simple pattern to make a Mini Stocking for hanging on the Christmas tree.  You can use it for small gifts or sweets.

Materials
Dk yarn (approx. 30m in red and 8m in white), 4.00mm hook.  This makes one about 12cm/5ins tall.
If you vary the hook size and yarn/thread, you can make them different sizes.

UK Instructions

Instep
Row 1:
  Ch 5, 2 dc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch, 2 dc in next ch, mark as right side, turn.  (6 sts)
Rows 2-7:  Ch 1, dc in each dc, turn.
Fasten off.

Leg & Foot
Chain 20, ss to 1st ch to form loop, taking care not to twist.
Rnd 1:  Ch 1, dc in each ch, ss to 1st  ch, mark as right side, turn. (20 sts)
Rnds 2-13:  Ch 1, dc in each dc, ss to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 14:  Ch 1, dc in next 7 dc, place instep against leg with right sides facing, matching dc’s on both pieces, working through both layers, dc in next 6 dc, dc in next 7 dc of leg only, ss to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 15:  Ch 1, dc in next 7 dc, working in ends of rows of instep, dc in next 6 rows, 2 dc in next row, working in unused loops of starting ch, 2 dc in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, 2 dc in next ch, working in ends of rows, 2 dc in next row, dc in next 6 rows, dc in next 7 dc of leg, ss to 1st ch, turn.  (36 sts)
Rnds 16-20:  Ch 1, dc in each dc, ss to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 21:  Ch 1, dc2tog twice, dc in next 10 dc, dc2tog 4 times, dc in next 10 dc, dc2tog twice, ss to 1st dc, turn.  (24 sts)
Row 22:  Ch 1, dc2tog twice, dc in next 6 dc, dc2tog 4 times, dc in next 6 dc, dc2tog twice, ss to 1st ch, turn.  (20 sts)

Turn stocking wrong side out and fold flat.  Working through both thicknesses, ss in the next 10 dc to form seam, fasten off.  Work ends in.  Turn stocking right way out.

Frill
Rnd 1:  With right side facing, attach white to 1st ch of unused loops of starting ch, ch 10, dc in same st, (forms hanging loop), dc in next 19 ch, holding loop to wrong side, ss to 1st ch, turn. (20 sts)
Rnd 2:  Ch 1, dc in each dc, ss to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 3:  Ch 1, (dc in next dc, ch 3, ss in 1st ch) 20 times, ss to 1st dc, fasten off.

Bow
Chain 40, fasten off.  Attach to front of stocking and tie in a bow.

US Instructions

Instep
Row 1:  Ch 5, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, 2 sc in next ch, mark as right side, turn.  (6 sts)
Rows 2-7:  Ch 1, sc in each sc, turn.
Fasten off.

Rnds 16-20:  Ch 1, sc in each sc, slst to 1st ch, turn.
Rnd 21:  Ch 1, sc2tog twice, sc in next 10 sc, sc2tog 4 times, sc in next 10 sc, sc2tog twice, slst to 1st sc, turn.  (24 sts)
Row 22:  Ch 1, sc2tog twice, sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog 4 times, sc in next 6 sc, sc2tog twice, slst to 1st ch, turn.  (20 sts)

Turn stocking wrong side out and fold flat.  Working through both thicknesses, slst in the next 10 sc to form seam, fasten off.  Work ends in.  Turn stocking right way out.
