I came into Rasta at 17 yrs of age... at a time when Rasta was Young in Aotearoa.. I heard of Rasta when I was in Jail...before I came to Rasta, and Rasta found me, I was Functioning with Aotearoa's Most, if Not , notorious Gang..the Mongrel Mob...and in that life I know I did some pretty Rough and Ruggard things..That was a walk I had to travel..I have no regrets, for the life I have Liven... at this point of my life..Iam 35 and Have been with Rasta eversince I pulled out of the Mob.. and that was a hard thing to do, I pulled out in Jail....still the brothers Ruled The Prison...I was Glad when I was Released....on 2nd Nov 1982.....a Day I will never forget while Im in babylon....
Rasta in the early days in Aotearoa, was pretty hard case alright..We were all young in Rasta,Heck the most advanced of us had'nt even got out of Psalms yet..there was some rits and rites in the early days, but we didnt know it as it.There was heaps of people com check out Rasta, man we use to Rock Auckland in the Early Days...Sound System was just a kind of new thing...Every Friday night we Rocked it....and our Sound System was Called in those Days, Jah Love Music after the Sound System in JA....Brother Hensley Joesph and Brother Oblix Brown were The DJs.
And Sound System took off from there In New Zealand...Then we saw a change over, from then we saw Oblix Brown aka Juda B, and Bro Issac Gad come to the Control Tower..
Somewhere along the line The term DJ was changed to mean chat upon the mic...But Here Now is the True term of DJ.....a DJ was the Selector...He Play the Music...and then Chatters come ride the ryddim..it Started in the late 50s and early 60s in Jamaica...right here I would like ta give a shout out, to the Jamaican Posse, thats where the roots of sound system is...Big upz Jamaica...DJ in babylon terms is a chatter on the mic, but in the Roots DJ is the Selector......anyway as I was saying Every Friday Night in Auckland City We Rocked...There was something about those Dances, we seen a mix of people come thru....they never experienced anything like it in NZ..and yet the word still went out..and people still came...Rasta Grew and Grew..
...Reggae in the Early Dayz in NZ..
Reggae in the early days, apart from Bob Marley, and Black Slate who also Toured here, in NZ I think the Home Grown sound of Herbs was Really the Start of it, and the Next Reggae Band I knew of, was DreadLion Band.. and Since those days Reggae has taken off. It is the Sound, that All People, nomatter how young or how old you are, it was a sound that you could listen to..
