Rockies South
The Rocky Mountains: American style - fewer glaciers - more people - still fabulous
Waterton National Park
Bad Rockies weather (is there any other kind?) chased us down here in 2002. This park features an abundance of large animals and many long wind swept ridges. Lineham Ridge is reached by following Rowe Creek up to the Tamarack Trail, the photo below was taken 5+ miles 3020ft gain from the trailhead. Near the US border is Akamina Ridge, part of a 12+ miles loop high (3000ft gain) above Wall Lake. Full photo essay here Waterton also features water taxis that lead to other great hiking destinations like Crypt Lake and Goat Haunt, the latter being inside U.S. National Glacier Park

Glacier National Park
 | Our one hike in this park was a 11 mile, 1600ft slog through the pouring rain to the Grinnell Glacier (both photos). On our next visit we will be looking to go a little deeper into the park, hopefully taking advantage one or more of the fabulous one way traverses possible in this park. The Garden Wall is the most famous hike in this park, from Logan Pass it's 11.6 mile traverse back to the Going-to-the-Sun road or 15+ miles to the Many Glacier area. An alternate traverse goes from Many Glacier to Siyeh Bend in 12.8 miles. Siyeh Pass can also be done as a 10 mile one way hike starting at the Siyeh Bend and exiting Sunrift Gorge. South of the Going-to-the-Sun road Gunsight Pass can be done as a 20 mile traverse to Lake McDonald. There is also a road in the southeast corner of the park to Two Medicine Lake and a host of trails interconnecting to all these access areas. | |
Yellowstone National Park
Tops on our list of things to see are the wild life and the world famous thermals. While Old Faithful may be the most well known its the colourful Grand Prismatic Spring and Morning Glory Pool which hold the most intertest for us. There aren't any day hikes on our Yellowstone wish list however were we able to go backpacking we would certainly be interested in the Shoshone Basin (18+ miles) and some the big waterfalls in the Cascade Corner (Union Falls 14+ miles & Dunanda Falls 18+ miles)
Grand Teton National Park
We are crossing our fingers hoping that we will get blue skies in the Tetons so we can capture these iconic mountains from Oxbow Bend, Moulton's Barn and a few other calender worthy locations. If we were hiking it would be tempting to try the 19 mile Lake Solitude loop via Cascade & Paintbrush Canyons.
