Arizona

Beyond the obvious....

Grand Canyon

National Park

...the state has a lot of other really cool places to check out.

Deep in the Grand Canyon is a magical land with turquoise waters, red rocks and a series of striking waterfalls.  Below: Navajo Falls

The land belongs to the Havasupai Tribe who maintain both lodge and a large walk-in  campground near the falls.  The Campground is a 10 mile trek into the valley, it has 250 sites but is popular enough that advanced reservations are recommended.  Guests also have the option of taking the helicopter, going on horseback or having their supplies delivered by mule trains.

Above: Your first glimpse of Havasu Falls.  Below: Mooney Falls is a little trickier to get to. Tunnels have been blasted into the rock and chains and fixed ladders installed. If you’re afraid of heights and exposure, this section of the trail is not for you!

Southern Arizona isn't high on our list for places to visit because it's mostly featureless desert, however it does contain some really cool cacti ...

The Wave (above) located in the Coyote Buttes area of the Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness. It's 5.5 miles round trip. There is no actual trail however the rangers give you a big speech about how to find it along with a map with pinpoints and actual photographs of landmarks with arrows on them. Permits required via lottery system. This place is a mecca for photographers, if you’re not carrying a tripod, you’ll feel out of place. The compositions here are endless and the lines, patterns and colors in the rocks will knock your hiking socks off!

Horseshoe Bend (above) This short 3/4-mile trail is located just outside of Page and it is not uncommon to see tour buses unloading here.  Page is also home to the most visited, most photographed slot canyon of them all: Antelope Canyon.

The famous 'mittens' of Monument Valley are on Navajo Nation land, to get beyond a roadside pull-out you need to hire a native guide.

Sedona is a lot of things to a lot of people, for photographers the 'energy' of the place is best captured at Red Rock Crossing lacated at the Crescent Moon Picnic Area just south of the town.  It is here that Oak Creek and Cathedral Rock (above) combine to create a calender quality composition. However the park doesn't open until 9am so your best lighting option is at dusk.
