The rightwing through its ownership of most of the mainstream media has tried to paint the word "liberal" as a dirty word. The reality is that liberal means "one who liberates". Liberals want all people of all races, of all descriptions, poor or rich, black, white, Jewish, Hispanic, women, disabled, elderly, and any who are oppressed liberated from oppression, poverty, injustice and hatred. Liberals believe in equality for all people, which is exactly what Jesus taught and fought for. It was the Pharisees who taught conservatism, racism, hatred, and strict adherence to their man-made rules without regard to compassion or need. And they hated Jesus for exposing their selfishness and arrogant hypocrisy.

What was so EVIL

Jesus himself, and the many other Biblical prophets of liberation, -- who for centuries have been promoting the idea that all kinds of people should be liberated from all manner of oppression and injustice ?

Moses, the first of several great liberators of "God's people", who began his liberal ways as a young man when he killed an Egyptian taskmaster to stop his brutalizing of his fellow Jews.

King David, for fighting the Philistines and many others to make his people free.

Gideon, Judith, Queen Esther, the Macabees, and so many whom the Bible hold up as heroes and models precisely because they were such "Liberals".

Our Revolutionary fore-fathers -- who fought to liberate white men from England's kings (although they failed to liberate people of other colors, and thought so poorly of their own womenfolk that it would take another 130 years before American women would be allowed to vote or hold office) ?

The revolutionary heroes in so many other countries who fought similar battles for freedom (liberation) of their oppressed peoples?

Abraham Lincoln and many other Republican Liberals -- who risked and often lost their lives to liberate America's black people from slavery before and during our Civil War?

Our feminist pioneers, Elizabeth Caty Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, -- who fought Conservatives for 70 years to get America's women the right to vote?

Mahatma Ghandi, who showed the world how to actually put into practice the non-violence that Christ had preached, in what is now the largest democracy in the world and in all of human history?

Nelson Mandella, who has done much the same in our own day in South Africa?

The World War II generations who fought to liberate Jews, Poles, the French, the English, and just about every body else in Europe from Nazi and then from Communist tyranny?

Eleanor Roosevelt who was voted the most admired woman in the world for eleven years in a row, long after her husband Franklin was no longer president of the United States?

The Liberals of all colors who have been fighting and dying since the Civil War, under the leadership of people like the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Caesar Chavez to liberate the descendents of black slaves and more recent immigrants from discrimination through peaceful but revolutionary legislative efforts?

Liberals like all of the above ....

Jesus wanted all people liberated from oppression. Jesus preached against the conservative religious and political leaders of his day. Jesus taught love for all people. Jesus taught equality. Jesus taught us to give to the poor. Jesus taught for employers to pay their employees well and to treat them well. He taught love and respect for all. "Give and it shall be given unto you, pressed down and running over..." God loves ALL people (and not least among them, the Liberal Democrats! )

Abe Lincoln was a Republican! But he was a Liberal! In his day, the Republican party was not the same party it is today. If Abe Lincoln were reborn in our time, he would be a Democrat. Read a biography of the man and refer to history and you will see it is true.

Never once will you find it in God's Word that it is Godly to take away from the poor in order to give tax breaks to the wealthy! And yet that is what a conservative Republican preacher will tell you. Oh, not in those words! They will mask it so that it does not seem to be that way.

Why does the retroactive tax cut for big corporations take away from the poor and give to the rich? Because the record surpluses Mr. Clinton left us were depleted long before the terrible tragedy of September 11, 2001. The surplus was depleted by the retroactive tax cuts and now to finance the government, your social security funds are being raided. Now, with the war-that-may-last-years which the Bush administration has declared, billions are going to defense spending. It all adds up to government programs for the poor, environment, and the states, etc. being CUT. Medicaid recipients are already paying $2 - $3 extra for prescriptions. Because the corporations do not even have to pay the "minimum" that they were paying before, and because of the bad economy and lower tax revenues from people who formerly paid capital gains taxes (but now can't because the economy is so bad), there is LESS MONEY. At this terrible time when Americans by the thousands are suffering from lost jobs, lost wages, lost stock revenues, etc., the Bush administration has given billions in refunds to elite corporations. This is effectively robbing from the poor to give to the ultra-rich.
