Derby was the world's best rat! We are going to miss your sweet kisses, being cuddled while watching T.V, your love of parties. Our parties will never be the same without you running around begging for potato salad, Beer, and chicken bones. Im sure you and Darwin are together now and having a great time, But until we meet again There will be a huge hole in all our hearts. Even my mom misses you...and that was the whole plan.You were the best P.R. rat out there.

Joan (born Marietta, Ga. Jan. 14, 2000
died Atlanta, Ga. July 21, 2002)

Joan was a basically nice rat girl, although somewhat aloof with
strangers. 
She did not bite once during her entire life.  She enjoyed a wide
variety of
treats, with the exception of very spicy foods and the sort of bitter
vegetables that most humans don't like much either.  Her favorite
"stupid
rat trick" (especially after her sister Laura died in July 2001) was to
go
all the way inside her human daddy's mouth in search of food crumbs. 
She
also liked to snuggle inside daddy's shirt and to escape into the
kitchen to
engage in chew-and-destroy missions (one of which required the
replacement
of a dishwasher). She died tragically in a household accident, but at
least
had a wonderful last meal on earth (ice cream, to hide her antibiotics
in). 
She was apparently a very religious (Jewish) rat; she did not seem to
mind
when her cage was thoroughly cleaned for Passover (to clean out crumbs
of
leavened bread, etc. which are traditionally forbidden to Jews during
that
holiday), she loved matzoh, and by an odd coincidence died only a few
days
after Tisha'B'Av (a traditional Jewish day of mourning for
miscellaneous
historic disasters).   Joan will be missed.
