Club History by Leo Hannula
The Bottom Timers were preceeded by a club called the West Coast Divers. That club was a for profit (Ed note: Maybe they were not related?) part of Underwater Sports dive shop owned by Tom Hemphill (with a couple other Dive Masters and Instructors). The club was to pay for them leading dives. This started about 1978.
In 1981 that club disbanded and Underwater Sports looked for an outlet to connect divers and help them continue diving. Underwater Sports and Tom Hemphill founded a shop club; Bottom Timers, and.was sole support for the club until 1985. That year a meeting was held and the club voted to become incorporated as a non-profit organization. Constitution; Bylaws and Washington state filing made it official in early 1986. We have been an active club of 20 to 40 members since then.
Early on we were know as "the spearfishing club" for our adventurous Neah Bay fishing trips. We do much more than hunt, including photography, tropical trips, boating, camping, and caving. We are now connected to Oregon Underwater dive shop (getting our famous discount there); but support all local dive operations. We are dedicated to safe enjoyment of our sport and the infastructure it requires.
That is the history of Bottom Timers dive club to date. This is a short version of a long story as all dive stories tend to be. See you at the Bottom!
The next part of the story is that we have become a social diving club. We all enjoy getting together for potluck feasts and games. We will continue going on dives but we will have no officers for the time being. We will always welcome new members.
