About Yourself
Hello

I am new to this lovely community site although I have belonged to op-l for a few years.  I lurk there, mainly, just reading the discussions.  It would be nice if more OPLs joined in.  Maybe they will come here!

I cannot get to our Fraternity meetings these days as they are on Saturdays and that's the day I have to spend with my elderly father, who's pretty poorly.  I have a hectic job, too (in PR) and commute 3 hours a day .  It involves a fair bit of international travel.  So I live a fair part of my spare time in cyberworld and find the net a great way to stay in touch with Dominicans and up to speed with what the Family is up to.  I am delighted that this site has been launched.  Congratulations to whoever thought it up.

I live with a couple of prima donna cats (male, actually) near Cambridge, in the part of eastern England called 'Constable country'.  Our parish church is Our Lady of Compassion, which by an amazing coincidence has just acquired, at auction, some statues and other stuff from the sister school of my old school, which was demolished when the (Servite sisters - OSM) community gave it up. You can imagine my amazement when I walked into church one morning to see a statue (Pieta) before which I had so often knelt as a child, nearly 40 years ago!   I teach RCIA as part of a team.

I had the huge pleasure and honour of going to Rome last year for the Dominican Art Exhibition, accompanying Zlata Vrabec, my Fraternity sister and one of the exhibiting artists.  We stayed at Santa Sabina (I wrote about it on op-l) and I will never forget it.  I may post a photo or two here, of Timothy and others at the exhibiton.

Love & prayers in St Dominic

Jill

About Yourself
I was born in the Philippines, but have lived in the United States since I was fifteen months old. IN 1992, I first met the Dominican professor friars at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT), in Berkeley CA, when I attended their morning Mass at DSPT. I transferred from the Franciscan School of Theology to our Dominican School because I felt I belonged with the Dominicans. Fr. Allen Duston, OP, was my very first Dominican professor. He taught me Canon Law. Fr. Luke Buckles, OP, who also teaches at DSPT, has been my spiritual father since 1992.

I attended the St. Jude's Novena at St. Dominic's Church in San Francisco, CA, in the summer of 1992 and found out about the Dominican Laity Chapter at St. Dominic's Church. I  subsequently inquired, was received, and made my first profession at St. Dominic's. I was the Chapter's secretary for a year before transferring to St. Albert's Chapter in Oakland, CA, party because my professor friars reside at St. Albert's Priory, which is also next door to the headquarters for the Western Dominican Province. Fr. Luke Buckles, OP, was the presider of the Mass at St. Albert's when I made my final profession in May, 2001.

I have made a number of presentations on social justice to my St. Albert's Chapter's general membership, as well as to the formation class. I also taught Centering Prayer during a Discernment Day for canndidates in the Formation Program. In June-July, 2001, I was the very first Dominican Lay person to attend a meeting of the North American Dominican Promoters forJustice, Peace and Care of Creation. Please pray for me because I have been approved to be appointed as the Western Dominican Province's Lay Promoter for Justice, Peace and Care of Creation.

I also attend social justice conferences and activities sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, and the San Francisco Archdiocesan Office of Public Policy and Social Concerns. The San Francisco Organizing Project, (SFOP) is a grassroots organization which I am involved in. Our San Francisco Archbishop, William Levada, supported affordable housing in 2001, and also sppports Prop. B, Homes for the City, which SFOP has worked hard to put on the Nov. 2002 San Francisco Election Day ballot.

Contemplative Outreach of Northern California is the group I affiliate with to support my practice of Centering Prayer. When feasible, I also attend the Shared Scripture Study at Mercy Center in Burlingame, CA. The Holy Spirit definitely must have directed me to Mercy Center this Fall of 2002, because the director of the Shared Scripture Study Program donated a book to me and copies of questions from the Little Rock Scripture Study Guide that cover Justice and Peace! I plan to use these resources next year for my bimonthly justice articles for "Christ in the World," our regional newsletter for the Laity of the Western Dominican Province, as well as for the quarterly justice articles I submit to the other four North American Dominican Laity newsletter editors.
