FAST JUNKIE is proud to bring you an exclusive brand new interview with fucking

Derek "The Skull" Tailer(Rhythm Guitars) of OVERKILL!

Thanks to Alexandrah for arranging this interview and helping with the questions.

Thanks to KissKitty for the killer graphics!

Greetings, thank you for taking the time to do an interview with FAST JUNKIE. What the hell's goin on?
Greetings to you! It’s ALL my pleasure!! A lot of things going on actually. WAY too many to list though. LOL!! In short, they are all good. Looking forward to the release of ReliXIV, touring, and wrecking some fucking necks worldwide!!

I'm intrigued by the new album's title..."Relixiv". Please explain...
Well, I can never be 100% accurate when it comes to the album titles, but I think it has to do with the release of the fourteenth studio record, hence the “XIV” in the title. When the time comes to “title” the record, that’s Blitz and D.D.’s department. And I think the “relix” reference comes through as a “play on words”.

In my opinion the current OVERKILL lineup is the best ever...this I feel is very obvious on the dvd. Have you received much flack from drunk fans of the old days?

Heh
Actually, that’s pretty funny. I can honestly say that most of the times, drunk fans come up to me and say…” DUDE!!! I remember seeing you on the blah blah blah tour when you guys played blah blah blah…you guys were awesome! I’ve been a fan since WAY BACK”. Reason why it’s funny, ‘cause I wasn’t even in the band back then! LOL!! No matter, it’s the intensity that counts. As long as it serves a purpose, I just go along with them, say my thanks and pay my respects. But, I never have encountered any type of negativity. I think that this current lineup speaks for itself.

What are your favorite tunes from "Relixiv"?
Hmmm! Tough one! They all slam in their own right! If I had to pin it down to three tunes, they would be:
Within Your Eyes
Bats in the Belfry
Keeper

What would need to happen to get Overkill touring the west?
LOL! Know how many times I have been asked this! LOL! Well, it comes down to this, each time something has come together in the form of a West Coast tour/run…it seems to fall apart due to many circumstances. Never one in particular, mind you. But be sure it’s always something. Everything happens for a reason, and when that time is right, we will be wrecking necks ALL up and down the West Coast.

Tell us a bit about the dynamics within this lineup. What does each member bring to the table in the studio, and out on the road.
Actually, really hard question to answer, considering that this is the only lineup I can really comment on, being a part of it that is. Previous lineups were specific to the history and sound of the band, rightly so and configured that way. While being a fan of the band before I was asked to become a part of it, I NEVER took favorites between the previous members / lineups. Why? Because the core of the band has always remained the same. Same ideas, direction and attitude. It’s crystal clear in the end result…the recordings. Dynamically, in the studio or out on the road, each member brings their own style, character and experience. Combined, it ALL makes for a very intense situation…which comes through on record and on stage.

Give me your thoughts on these classick albums:

 "Feel The Fire"
Reminds me of the L’Amour days. Going there to see other bands and having that record being blasted over the PA.
     "The Years Of Decay"
Just one thought…..”Evil Never Dies”!!! AWESOME!
     "I Hear Black"
Probably, my least favorite Overkill record. Don’t know why?
     "Necroshine"
Would be clearly my third favorite Kill album.

If I am right, you joined after the recording of "Bloodletting"...no? How much input did you have on Killbox 13?...which is easily one of the best OVERKILL albums!
You are correct sir!! Input is really strange word to me. I don’t really think of it as input, more that I do think of it as more of suggestions. In pre production, I think we all get the feel of the song, but color it a different way. Sometimes, we all see the same color, sometimes we don’t. It’s a matter of what feels right. It’s hard to explain, but as far as input, it’s a collective process between us.
One of the best? Hmmm! Another tough one. I can’t really pin point that, but I can tell you my favorite. “From the Underground…”, hands down!

The "Wrecking Everything" dvd is amazing...this looked like a very heartfelt performance, any memories that stand out from that show?
Lots! But the most memorable, would be my wireless crapping out on me in the beginning of “It Lives”. THAT SUCKED FUCKIN’ ASS!!!!!!!!! LOL!!!

D.D. Verni amazes me....I know he writes alot of the songs/music....does he write on bass, or guitar?
Guitar. Very rarely do I see him, working on something on a bass, song wise.

I receive a fair amount of smirks and jokes and snide comments when I tell people OVERKILL are my favorite band..."oh i hate that singer" "oh theyre still around?" etc.,      Do you get this alot?
Not generally, but I have encountered that in the past. Mostly it has to do with the comment regarding Blitz’s vocals.

Any other releases being discussed this early? To follow "Relixiv"?
Not at this moment. But hey, who knows what tomorrow will bring! LOL!

What bands influence you?
Another tough one. Everybody influences me, it’s just a matter of how I use that expression. From metal, to pop, to techno…..it’s hard to point it to a groups of bands. If I like it, I like it, if I don’t it sucks!!! LOL!!

Who have you worked with that has really had an effect on you musically
Finally, a real easy question!!!! LOL!!!
Hands down…Dee Snider. The explanation is WAY too lengthy! But I will say this, Dee is an AMAZINGLY talented individual and a true inspiration in every sense of the word.

What would you like to see Overkill do next
LOL!!! The West Coast? Hawaii? Australia? LOL!!! Pretty much continue the journey…make records, tour and have a fucking blast doing it!!!

Thanks again Derek...Last Words...
Sure…I (give a) HUGE shout out and a “fuck yea!!!” to ALL Kill fans worldwide! Sit tight, cause we are comin’ to wreck yer neck soon!
Thanks for the opportunity to speak and be heard!
