- From Uniontown, take U.S. 119 North to the PA Turnpike, near Youngwood in Westmoreland County.
- Take the PA Turnpike West to Irwin.
- From Irwin, take U.S. 30 West to S.R. 48 North, east of McKeesport, Allegheny County.
- Continue on 48 North across Turtle Creek to S.R. 130.
- Take 130 West to the mouth of Turtle Creek on the Monongahela.
- Continue on 130 until Braddock Avenue (in the Borough of Turtle Creek).
- Turn onto Braddock Avenue and continue on Braddock Avenue until reaching Penn Avenue.
- Turn LEFT onto Penn Avenue and follow Penn to Point State Park in Downtown Pittsburgh.
- Proceed south (turn left at the light) on Commonwealth and follow to the Fort Duquesne Bridge.
- Cross the Fort Duquesne Bridge and proceed north on S.R. 65 (Ohio River Boulevard) to Beaver County, where there are three trail options!
- The Heritage Route (most suitable for Tour Buses) follows S.R. 65 N in Beaver County to where it connects with S.R. 68 East. Exit S.R. 65 at Rochester and follow the signs for S.R. 68 to Zelienople.<?li>
- The Historic Route follows S.R. 65 N in Beaver County past Crow’s Run Road to the Freedom Exit. Follow the exit ramp to the right and come to the stop sign. Straight ahead of you is the Vicary House and the Main Street of Freedom. Turn RIGHT onto Harvey Run Road. Follow Harvey Run Road to intersection with Freedom Crider Road. Stop at stop sign, opposing traffic does not stop. Turn RIGHT onto Freedom-Crider Road. Follow Freedom-Crider Road to intersection with Lovi-Road (Y-intersection). Follow the left branch at the Y which is Lovi Road. At the bend where Lovi Road bears to the right (East), turn off on Blacks Woods Road which continues North. Follow Blacks Woods Road to its intersection with Big Knob Road. Turn RIGHT. Follow Big Knob Road to just past Big Knob and turn LEFT onto Miller Road. Follow Miller Road to its intersection with S.R. 989 N. Follow S.R. 989 N to its intersection with Glen Eden Road (S.R. 989 N follows Glen Eden Road). Follow Glen Eden Road (S.R. 989 N) a short distance and turn RIGHT onto Willoughby Run Road (a limited access road). Follow Willoughby Run Road to its intersection with Ziegler Road. Cross Ziegler Road and proceed straight ahead on Muntz Road to its intersection with S. R. 68 E. Turn RIGHT and continue on S. R. 68 E. into Zelienople.
- The Scenic Route, which follows the motor route suggested by Paul Wallace, author of the 1965 book, “Indian Paths of Pennsylvania” follows S.R. 65 N in Beaver County to Conway-Wallrose Road (S.R. 2008). Turn RIGHT. Continue on 2008 to S.R. 989. Follow 989 North to Route 68 East. Follow 68 to Zelienople.
Top - Continue on Route 68 East through Zelienople into Harmony, Butler County.
- Continue on the main street of Harmony to Mercer Road and S.R. 19.
- Follow 19 North to Portersville.
- Take West Park Road North to S.R. 422.
- Take 422 East to S.R. 528.
- Take S.R. 528 North to S.R. 8 and S.R. 173.
- Take 173 North to Slippery Rock and S.R. 108.
- Follow 108 East to S.R. 8 and continue on 8 North to Venango County.
- Continue on S.R. 8 North to around Wesley, and then take Old Route 8 to Franklin.
- From Franklin, take S.R. 322 West into Mercer County.
- Follow S.R. 322 West through Mercer County to Crawford County.
- Continue on S.R. 322 West to Linden Street in Meadville.
- Turn LEFT (east) onto Linden Street.
- At the next traffic light, turn RIGHT onto Park Avenue, and proceed north seven traffic lights to Randolph Street.
- Turn LEFT one block to see DAR monument, then turn RIGHT and travel one block for Venango Path monument at Terrace and Locust Streets. (There is a curb cut for parking and an interpretive kiosk for the French Creek Feeder Canal.)
- Continue north on Terrace to Reynolds Avenue access to Meadville Arterial (French Creek Parkway) U.S. 6/19. Follow 6/19 North to Erie County.
- NOTE: Before leaving Crawford County, a side trip for visitors would be to follow U.S. 6/19, turning RIGHT (east) at the traffic light in Venango Borough. Continue into Cambridge Springs. Turn RIGHT, and then LEFT at Triangle Park to visit the Cambridge Springs Museum. Turn LEFT at the Triangle Park and travel over the bridge to see the Riverside Inn.
Alternate route for motorcoach transportation or to avoid the downtown area: enter Meadville at Linden Street and travel two traffic light to the Arterial Highway U.S. 6/19. Turn RIGHT and proceed north to Saegertown. Take U.S. 6/19 North into Erie County. - Follow 19 North to Fort LeBoeuf in Waterford.
Top Return Route - Return from Erie County on the same routes through Crawford, Mercer, and Venango Counties (since Washington traveled back from the French fort by canoe via French Creek).
- Continue on S.R. 8 to the Old Stone House in Butler County.
- From the Old Stone House follow S.R. 528 to Prospect and Evans City.
- Take S.R. 68 East to George Washington monument and return to Evans City.
- From 68 East take S.R. 528 South (Franklin Road) to Allegheny County.
- Follow S.R. 19 South to S.R. 910.
- Follow 910 East to S.R. 8.
- Follow 8 South to Route 28 West, and then cross the 40th St. Bridge and turn left onto Butler Street.
- Follow to Rt. 8 and continue on 8 to U.S. 30. Follow 30 East to S.R. 148. Take 148 South to the McKeesport area. Continue on 148 South to S.R. 48.
- Take 48 North, back to U.S. 30. Take U.S. 30 East, into Westmoreland County.
- Continue on U.S. 30 East until S.R. 66.
- Travel 66 South, which will become U.S. 119 South through Fayette County to U.S. 40.
- Take U.S. 40 East through Somerset County, and across the Pennsylvania/Maryland border
