Introducing one chinchilla to another should not be rushed. Never put two chinchillas together unless they have been proply introduced because it is quite likely that they will fight and one or even both will get hurt For about two weeks before you put the pair together place there cages close together so they can get to know each other through the wire, after about Two weeks put them in a larger clean cage new to both of them, put in some wood, a chew block or even news paper, this will give them something to do and as they play they will get used to each other.
If you buy a pair from a chinchilla breeder he/she will probably introduce them for you maybe using the polygamous system two cages side by side with a tunnel that runs across them, the male will be able to get into the tunnel via the pop hole and run over the female’s cage and they can get to know each other though the wire. The female is fitted with a collar, which will stop her from getting though the pop hole in her cage, after about two weeks the shutter is taken out of the pop hole and the male can come and go as he pleases.
Whichever method you use you must keep an eye them for a while, usually all will be well, but if the male proves to be aggressive a wooden box may be placed in the cage for the female to run into until things quieten down sometimes the female is aggressive and will rear up under the pop hole preventing the male from making his escape in this case help the male to get back into the tunnel replace the shutter and try again the next day.
