Australian Tropical Gelbvieh

Congratulations to Brice Kaddatz who is now on the Board of the Australian Gelbvieh Association!

In January 1994
Bar GR Cattle met with Brice & Fran Kaddatz and Charlie & Jean Borg of  Australian Tropical Gelbvieh at Marklands in Sarina, Queensland. An article was written by Gail entitled "Queensland's Beef Industry from a Canadian Perspective" for the ATG (Part I and II now available).  In 1995 the ATG made arrangments to import and market semen from Bar GR Cattle's Gelbvieh bulls;
Goldrush 14X, JEB I'm a Sensation, and XZ Yukon Prospector. Please click on the underlined names to learn more about these herd sires and the availability of semen in Australia. Evan & Jean McKenzie from Blackwater, Queensland attended the World Gelbvieh Conference in Calgary, Alberta in July 1996. In September 1997 Gail Anderson traveled to Queensland and spoke at Spring Valley Farms Brahman Stud Sale in Gympie on "The Selection of Replacement Females".  Gelbrah females like the one in the first photo below were on display! At that time Gail also visited the McKenzie's in central Queensland to see their purebred Gelbvieh calves from Bar GR's genetics and Frank & Joan Dittman at Ilbilbie, (coastal) Queensland to see their commercial Brahman X Gelbvieh calves.

All of ATG's purebred Gelbvieh females are now situated at Tantallon in Blackwater, Queensland. They have been using a Poll Cody herd sire who was the Calf Champion in Rockhampton in 1997. ATG recently purchased a polled outcross Gelbvieh bull and now have ATG Terry ( a Woodland Samuel son out of Silver Downs Miss 12Y who is by Bozo). ATG believes that Gelbvieh makes an ideal cross with the Brahman cattle in Queensland (the increased hybrid vigor of Bos taurus X Bos indicus is well documented). Gelbvieh is not tick resistant like the Brahman but the pure breed does appear to be tick tolerant. ATG has been experimenting with genetically designing a new breed Gelbrah (Gelbray is a similar, but not the same, genetically designed breed in North America).

A Gelbrah (Gelbvieh X Brahman) cow/calf pair owned by Bob Conaghan & family at Barmount Station" Feedlot Marlborough Qld. On the Australian Gelbvieh Association website Bob is quoted as saying: " I am impressed with the hardiness of the Gelbvieh breed under our harsh central Qld conditions. They are a docile breed which crosses very well with the Brahman seed stock to produce earlier maturing bullocks of good temperament. All our Gelbvieh cross steers reach Jap Ox weight at milk tooth and carcass quality is excellent. The mothering ability of the Brahman X Gelbvieh females and their increased milk production enable them to produce heavy robust weaner calves."

An ATG Gelbrah bull owned by Brian Kaddatz from Gympie. The bull has been transposed to Brian's grandparents' property on the coast near Mackay, Queensland (coincidentally Brahman cows with Gelbvieh calves at side were grazing on this beautiful tropical beach).

A Gelbvieh first calf heifer with her RVA Goldrush 14X calf at side. Tantallon in Blackwater (central Queenland) is owned by Evan & Jean McKenzie.

Please click on http://www.gelbvieh.com.au to learn more about the Australian Gelbvieh Association - Queensland Branch. Their Web Site includes a brief history of the Gelbvieh breed,  performance statistics, sales & promotions, a list of members, and the use of the breed in Queensland (including photos and information on Gelbrah).  Please check under Gelbvieh Links and scroll down to 'BREEDS OF LIVESTOCK (GELBVIEH AND GELBRAY' to learn more about the Gelbray breed in North America.

Please click on Part I of  "Queensland's Beef Industry from a Canadian Perspective" featuring Bar GR Gelbvieh's visit with Brice & Fran Kaddatz and Part II  featuring our visit with Charlie & Jean Borg. Part III on the Australian Tropical Gelbvieh Trust and the development of the Gelbrah breed will be available in 2005! See a photo of Adam, the original purebred Gelbvieh bull at Kadfam Bull Stud, at  13 years of age and still in production in tropical Queensland. Australian visitors check our Down Under messageboard for updates and an ATG Photo Album has just been added for 2004!
