BAR GR CATTLE'S HERDBUILDING STORY! |
| | Bar GR Gelbvieh Cattle, Box 1342, High Prairie, Alberta, Canada | | Phone (780) 523-2116 FAX (780) 523-2116 Cell (780) 523-8509 | We take great pride in the fact that we have bred our herd up over the past 20 years from the top females in our commercial cow herd! Initially we purchased superior Gelbvieh bulls and also used artificial insemination. We then used embryo transfer to genetically design herd sires like Bar GR Desperado 3F (a half brother to SLC Freedom who has the highest number of Gelbvieh progeny registered in the United States in 2002).
In 2002 we purchased Zues Black Eagle from Taylor Farms in Stony Plain, Alberta. His outcross American pedigree, easy fleshing phenotype and homozygous black genetic make-up has added another dimension to our purebred Gelbvieh operation. THE FOUNDATION SIRE The cornerstone of our purebred Gelbvieh program is the horned fullblood bull, RVA Goldrush 14X, whose progeny are as far away as Australia. In 1989 he was the second high selling Gelbvieh bull on test with 70 other Gelbviehs at Little Red Feeders in Alberta. We used careful selection and strict culling to produce high quality polled females. He has passed on fertility, easy calving, large pelvic size and moderate frame. Click here on Goldrush for statistical data, EPD's and a photo of him at 12 years of age. One of his 50% daughters is featured as a calf with her Charolais X Angus dam and as a ten year-old cow! Goldrush 14X at 2 years of age Goldrush was used extensively at Bar GR Gelbvieh Cattle to produce 50% females from the best females in our commercial herd. Goldrush himself as a herd bull had 70% or better of his females bred in the first 21 days. As a 5-year old he bred 60 head of females and still maintained that record. | | The 75% Gelbvieh bull calf at side is a polled Goldrush son! | | Bar GR Miss Windy 21Y | | | | These two Goldrush sired twin heifer calves had a combined 200-day weight of 1100 lbs. | | Charolais X Simmental Cow | | | | This Goldrush sired 50% heifer calf at side was displayed at Farmfair in 1992! | | Red Angus X (CH X SM) Cow | | To learn more about the artificial insemination program first used at Bar GR Gelbvieh Cattle in the 90's and to see some photos of the resulting progeny please click on The AI Program or check out some of our Fabulous Females.
