How do I sign in to my passport?

There is a sign in link at the top right hand corner of your browser. Click on it and a sign in screen will pop up.  Enter your nickname and password.  If you have several passport nicknames, make sure the one you're signing in under is the one you used to join the group or you can't post or reply to messages..

How come I can't access the site even though I'm a member?

GHFF is classified as "restricted", which means anyone can view our pages without being a member.  We sometimes go "Private" which only allows members access.  If you know you're a member and can't get in, you'll see a 'sign in' screen asking you to sign in to access the site.  Also, make sure you're signed in on the passport you joined the group with and you should be able to view the entire site with no problems.

How do I begin a new message on the message board?

Click on "New Discussion" to get a new text box.  Type in the subject of the message (DO NOT mention spoilers in the subject line).  We've got several boards you can post on, if you don't see the board your message would go in, post it under "General".  Type your message and click "Send Message".

How do I reply to a message already posted?

If you see a message you'd like to reply to, hit 'reply' while in the thread.  When your text box opens, type your message. **If you want to reply to a specific message, you can Copy and Paste it into your text box, then add your response underneath.  Click "Send Message", it will show up at the bottom of the thread.

How can I see all the message boards on one page?

To see a list of all our message boards, click on "Message Board" on the Left Navigation bar, under that link, you'll see "Message Board List". Click on that. You can select to view any message board from this page. To see all of the message boards at once, select "ALL TOPICS" at the bottom of the list. All boards will now be on the same page. This is recommended so you won't miss anything while on the boards.

How do I change the color, font and size of my messages?

Open your text box; select "Font Style" at the top.  A drop downbox will open and give you the options to choose from.  If you want to use a font that isn't listed, go down to "other font" and manually type in the font** you wish to use. **Please know this font MUST be in your actual computer files in order for it to be used.  After you've selected the font, go to the right and select'font size'. Try not to use the 5-7 size fonts for the entire message since they're very big. These instructions are done in size 2.  To select a font color, click on the A and choose a color from there.  Please make sure to use one that isn't hard to see. After you've done all this, type your message and send it off.  MSN does not include a way to save these setting for you, so you'll have to go through this each time you post.  Finally, you MUST use Microsoft Internet Explorer to be able to use these features, other browsers are not supported.

How do I insert a picture or clipart into my message?

Open your text box; select the picture icon (little yellow box with mountains on it).  When you click on this another window will open and you'll have 3 choices:
My online photos: This is where you'll find all photos listed in ALL the MSN groups you're a member of.
Please do not post other peoples work unless they have given permission.--  Please refer to "Bandwidth Theft" at the bottom of this page.
My Computer: This will open up picture files on your own computer.
Online Gallery: This is clipart furnished by MSN.
Once you've figured out where the photo/clipart is, select the correct tab. Find the photo/clipart and click on it, then select "add photos". You will come back to your text box and the clipart will be there. Type your message, if you want to change font, color-etc...refer to the above instructions.  Send your message when done.

How can I get more storage?

MSN allots you 3MB of free storage space which can be used to upload pictures and clipart.  When you reach that limit you will have to delete something in order for more things to be posted.  To do this, go to the "My Groups" page while you're signed in to your passport.  On their left navigation bar you'll see a "My Storage Info" tab--click there. A list of all the sites you're a member of will come up and will also show where you've posted particular art.  There are three tabs, the first one will show where you've added to albums--leave those alone unless you want to delete from there.  The second will be "My Documents", this is usually used by site Managers.  The tab you want to clear out is "My attachments", click on the site you wish to delete old art from and select. You'll get a prompt asking if you really want to delete.  Select yes and you'll then get some of your storage space back.  Do this every so often if you've posted lots of clipart.  MSN also offers a 30MB storage space for a yearly fee, if you're interested.

What is Horizontal Scrawl?

This is what happens when you post pictures side by side and they are so large they  take up the entire text box and more.  In order to prevent this, post photos one on top of the other. (Vertically) If you're only adding one photo and it takes up the entire text box, resize it before sending.  To do this, make sure the little white boxes are visible around the picture, (click on picture to get them). Take the corner and bring it in to a more desirable size.

How do I 'hide' text within a message?

Open text box; type message as usual using font of your choice.  When you're done highlight the area you'd like to 'hide', open the font color box (A). Go down to the far left hand corner and select white--NOTE--if you're beginning a new thread, use the color next to white (cream)--that's what color all new threads use when started.  After you've hidden your text, send message. Please note where the hidden text is so it will be easy to find. Use something like ( ), [ ], { } or : :.

How do I read "hidden text"?

Point your cursor to the part of the message that has the hidden text. Hold your left mouse button down and scroll over the area.  The text will appear in the highlighted area, but will disappear when you click off of it.

How do I hide my email address in my profile?

THIS IS REQUESTED BY GHFF MANAGEMENT. You have to be signed in on your passport AND at the site.  Click on this link: My GHFF E-Mail settings .  At the top of the page will be a space with your email address in it.  Below that is a box, if that box is checked, uncheck it. DO NOT ERASE YOUR ADDRESS OUT OF THE BOX.  Scroll to the bottom of the page and "Save Changes".

How do I STOP all the messages from coming to my inbox?

You have to be signed in on your passport AND at the site.  Click on this link: My GHFF E-Mail settings . At the middle of the page, there are three selections you can choose from: "On the Web" means you will read all messages on the site. Select this to STOP getting all messages in your inbox. "Daily Digest" will send you one email listing the messages that were posted that particular day. "Inbox" will send ALL messages posted on the board to your email inbox. Please note: GHFF receives an average of 350+ messages a day, give or take.  Make sure you scroll to the bottom and save your changes. Also select "NEVER" in the Group Reports or all the message will be sent at once, filling up your inbox.

SEVERAL OF THESE FEATURES WORK ONLY WITH INTERNET EXPLORER

How do I make sure I don't have a virus?

GHFF also recommends that you have a virus scanning program on your computer, and that it is updated regularly. You can scan your system online, to make sure you don't have any viruses.  Here are two popular places to do that.

Symantec Online Virus and Security Check
Trend Micro HouseCall

Note that you cannot repair a virus with these links, you can only detect if you have one.

To clean common viruses from your system:

Symantec Virus Tools

How many MSN groups can I belong to?

MSN allows you to belong to 100 groups.  You should periodically go through your list of groups and unjoin the ones you don't go to or that are not very active.

What is "Bandwidth Theft"?

Bandwidth Theft is a term you will hear/see around the MSN Groups.  Bandwidth is a term that relates to "Internet Traffic".  Think of it like electricity.  Your home needs electricity to work and you get charged for using it.  Think of Bandwidth Theft as being the same as if you took a long extension cord and ran it to a house down the street.  You would get power from it, but your neighbor would pay for it.

What it really relates to is when you put a picture into your Message Board  posts or Group pages which is actually located at another site. By doing this you don't use up "space" in your MSN "Passport" but everytime someone views the picture, MSN has to go out to the other site to get the picture.  That costs MSN money and it also costs the other site where the picture is money.  If the page is viewed a lot, or if people do a lot of this, it costs a lot of sites a lot of money. Sharing pictures within MSN groups does not count towards Bandwidth.

How do I avoid Bandwidth Theft?

You should never post pictures in Message Board posts or on MSN Group pages unless the pictures  are stored in an MSN Group that you belong to.  You can also post pictures from your own computer.
