| Viewers Voice Written by: Angela Ok, the idiots in charge have finally done it!! They have found a new and vomitous way to make me concede my point, previously made, that the end of Sonny and Carly was a good thing. It has taken a long time, we have seen many failed or teased reconciliations, several mob hits, a tatooed brain tumor-addled maniac, a brief wedding/divorce to Alkazar and one trip to a psych ward (plus, 2 new actresses in the role, to boot--let's hope that Laura Wright is a keeper), but, my white flag is up..I give--Uncle. The Sonny and Carly juggernaut, as overused and repetitious as it can be, is a better alternative to the storyline direction that GH is taking right now.
Sonny and Emily is just plain gross. If this story were told more from Sonny's point of view and told as a midlife crisis tale where Emily just got sucked in somehow, it would be a lot easier to see being able to watch a scene with them in the foreseeable future. And, it would allow the idiot writers to continue placing Emily in the damsel in distress role that they like so much. ( She may as well put on the tall, pointy hat with the long scarf and sit in her tall ivory tower. Woe is Emily...Woe is Emily... ) That would be timely, given Mo's age relative to Emily's age, and really give the show an edge. ( I am thinking it would really be the Most soaps would not be so daring as to take their leading man and showcase him in a story where he questioned his own machismo (how 70's is that word-machismo?). But, I think that Mo could pull it off...I think he could take the story and really run with it, hitting the high and low points of male menopause. Given that such a large population of soap viewers are in an age range that could really relate to this phenomenon, I think it would set GH apart from other shows. Plus, it would not make viewers cringe at the sight of Emily on the screen after the storyline tanks. More than that, this storyline would not completely obliterate the friendship between Jason and Sonny, as the current one threatens to do. It would be innovative storytelling to make it about Sonny's aging in that most of our society likes to pretend that aging ceases after 21. It would be different, interesting, engaging and most refreshingly REAL to do a male menopause story. Consider how engaging, at first, we found a mob boss seeing a psychiatrist in the Sopranos...we are over it now but initially, it was an interesting twist that became a huge storyline plot point and spurned several secondary stories. This could do the same for GH but this time let's talk about all the not so entertaining aspects of a male midlife crisis. Let's not gloss over it or dumb it down to a convertible sportscar and young girl...let's showcase the mood swings, the off and off affection, the confusion, the feelings that there is more behind in his life than ahead of him and the resulting depression...let's feel the alienation that Carly, Jason, the kids and everyone would feel if this really were true. This could be so beautiful, in many ways, if GH would just allow it. Once aware of his changes, Sonny could have uncomfortable conversations with Carly about his feelings and what he is going thru...we could see her struggle to love a man that would put her through all this. We could see Emily's struggle over whether or not she was a for real girlfriend or just his midlife crisis girlfriend and her decision if that risk was worth the pain and possible losses in her life.
This story just runs so high on the Ick Factor that little meter is going to spin off its axis. If the show had not SORASED Emily due to Amber's departure, this character would be 20? 22?. Sonny has got to be pushing midlife crisis 40 city. If you had a daughter Emily's presumed age that considered dating a man as old as Sonny, wouldn't you have a semi-melt down? I would...I should not be able to compare high school stories with any suitor with my child!!! For that matter, Robin is older than Emily and I consider her too young for Sonny...this whole story has got to go or be turned around to serve a larger, more important purpose. | Email your submission to
