> Hello Cathy.. Just thought I'd drop you another note...
> Niki's NA test is coming up in 5 weeks (Sept 12th), she should do very well as she's well on her way.. Actually I think she could do well in the UPT test. Due to the slow economy etc. I've been to only student at the weekly training class thus the trainer and I spend all day working with Niki. She has progressed tremendously. The only area of concern is the "tracking" part according to Navhda rules... The trainer doesn't like to do tracking as he likes to have the dogs work with a high head and tracking is contrary to his approach... He raises English setters thus he doesn't focus on NAVHDA rules. We've spent several weeks trying to keep her nose up and now we encourage her to put her nose down..
> The only problem is that I'm trying to get Niki to "slow down" she wants to run ahead staying down wind of a track. Every time she'll cover a 50 yard track in 3 seconds.. She always goes directly to, and finds the "bird" but according to navhda they want more of a slow methodical approach..
> My plan is to put her on a leash and make her go slow.. Perhaps adding a treat or 2 along the way so she finds some sort of benefit to stay "on track".. Any suggestions would be appreciated. To date most of the tracking training has been in short grass perhaps in taller grass she may slow down some... The only problem is the grass is either mowed or chest deep now days.
> Other than that she's doing great.. Here are some comments from the trainer.

> 1) Prettiest shorthair I've ever seen.
> 2) very soft coat
> 3) very soft mouthed.
> 4) great nose.
> 5) does everything we've asked her to do.
> 6) continue working on socialization..

> Now that we've got her started my sweet little girl has changed.. She now whines at me to go outside and train, it's all a great big fun game to her. I bought a dozen pigeons and very day she wants to go out to the barn as soon as I get home from work. She'll go out to the coupe, hit a point and stand there for 20 minutes. I'll just let her stay there, go about my business and when I come back there she is, still there like a statue. Just a slight quiver due to excitement and her nostrils "sucking in scent".
> I have to actually take her by the collar and "heel" her off otherwise she might be there all night..
>
> As far as her sight goes she is doing well.. So far she's tracked and located "downed" pigeons. Quail maybe another issue as she can't really see a tennis ball that is thrown but can see a throwing dummy just fine.. We're supposed to be hunting 6 planted Hungarian partridge this coming weekend as a "graduation ceremony", that'll determine just where she is at.
