Pray, pray and pray some more
. He who prays and doesn't witness is a hypocrite, but he who witnesses and doesn't pray is a lunatic. The battle for souls is won in the prayer room. Witnessing is about being obedient and going out to harvest the fruit that your prayers produced. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective especially when it comes to fighting the big time battle for souls. Never underestimate the power of prayer and how it moves the heart and the hand of God. John 17:20, Acts 2:42, Romans 8:26, Romans 8:10, 2-Corinthians 13:9, Ephesians 6:18-19, James 5:16 & Phillipians 4:19 just to name a few Our motive must always be, love for the Lord and love for the Lost
. Our motive for witnessing can never be any more or less than love. We always must be focused on our love for the one who loved us so much He laid His precious and perfect life down for us. Additionally, it's important to note, you don't sow seeds because you want to see souls saved, you want to see souls saved and that's why you sow seeds. The priority must always be to care more about the person you're witnessing to than wanting to witness to them. John 14:15, John 14:21, 1 Peter 1:22, 1 John 2:5, 1 John 5:3, & 1-Corinthians 13:2-3 The power is in the seed, not the sower
. You can always count all the seeds in an apple but you can never count the apples in a seed. Everyone you share the full Gospel with, you lead to the Lord and they will all make a decision. All you have to do is be a faithful farmer and persistently and perpetually sow the seeds of the Gospel. God will do the rest. Matthew 13:3-13, Matthew 13:37-43, 1-Corinthians 3:6-8, 1-Corinthians 15:36-38 & Revelation 14:15
Submit to the Lord, resist the devil and he will flee from you. If you will obey the great commission, fight through your fears and sow the seed of the Gospel, amazing things will start to happen in your relationship with Him. I tell you the truth. From the first or second word out of your mouth the fear will flee and you will find yourself supernaturally supercharged by the power of the Holy Spirit. You may go out dragging your feet but you will come back clicking your heels! James 4:7, 1 Peter 2:17 & Psalms 126:5-6
Don't tell God how big your fear is. Tell your fear how big your God is! God doesn't give us a spirit of fear of love, power and sound mind. Fear come from the enemy but God uses it so we will lean on Him and not on ourselves, others or even worse, the world. Remember the antidote to your fear is love for perfect love casts out all fear. 2-Timothy 1:7, 1 John 4:18, & 1-Corinthians 2:2-5
God's Word Never Returns Void. Remember to quote scripture when witnessing. Quote the bible and in particular what Jesus said. It's not our words that make the difference, its God's word that never returns void and that carries all the weight and authority. Spend time memorizing scripture and even take a few scriptures based on topic on some index cards out with you when you witness. God's word is sharper than any doubled edge sword and will cut them to the bone. Isaiah 55:10-12, Hebrews 4:12, 2-Timothy 4:2, 1-Corinthians 1:17 & 1-Corinthians 2:4
Law to the Proud and grace to the Humble. Remember, God resists the proud but give grace to the humble. So ask question in order to ascertain if the person is proud or humble. Don't just assume they are proud and hammer them with the Law when they may be humble, at the end of their rope and looking for hope. They made need the healer and not the hammer but the only way you'll know is to ask questions and evaluate their answers. The only offensive weapon in this war for souls that God has given you is the sword of the spirit. Remember to wield wisely the sword of the spirit by using both sides of it (One Side Law, the other side Grace). Remember, the Law is good only if used lawfully for its intended purpose. Psalms 19:7, Proverbs 3:34, John 8:7, Luke 18:18-20, Luke 10:25-29, James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5, Ephesians 6:17, Galatians 3:24 & 1-Timothy 1:8
Always keep one eye on the cross. No matter what they say to get you off track, also remember the destination is the cross and God's grace. It's God's kindness that leads us to repentance. When you take off for a flight the pilot files a flight plan. During the course of the flight they might make several adjustments but they never lose sight of the destination. So it is when we witness. Watch out for the rabbit trail and try not to follow down that path. Always keep you eyes and mind on the destination, not the distraction and keep your focus on the finish line. 1-Corinthians 1:17-18, Romans 2:4, Romans 8:2 & Colossians 1:20
Repetition is the mother of all learning. This is true for all things. Whether is walking, talking, riding a bike and yes, even evangelism. The more you do it, the better you get. The better you get the more fun you'll have. The more fun you have, the more you'll want to do it. There's a first time for everything and a season for all things. When it comes to witnessing to someone there's only two seasons; in season and out of season. Most everyone I have ever met will tell you that they had to work at being a good witness for Christ both verbally and in their life decisions and actions. No one immediately knows everything there is to know about anything. We all have to learn and the best place to start is at the beginning. Fortunately due to all the material people like Ray Comfort has made available to all of us, we can actually start much father down the road than where most people have to begin. 1-Corinthians 9:24-25, 2 Timothy 4:2
Learn to Listen. It was once told to me that I had two ears and one mouth so I should try to listen twice as much as I talk. Learning to listen to God, the voice of the Holy Spirit and to what others are telling you are crucial and essential elements to effective evangelism. Ask people good open and closed questions and then train yourself to listen intently to what the other person says. The ability to be a good listener is a great asset to any evangelist. Remember, listening is not just waiting for your turn to talk, it's actually hearing what the other person says with the heart felt agenda to help them with their question, issue or concern. I know it sounds cliché, but they won't care how much you know until they know how much you care. One way to show you care is to listen. More people have made more mistakes in the bible due to their refusal to listen to God, His prophets or others than any other one thing. When you refuse to listen, you will quickly find yourself in a place of fruitlessness and frustration. The number one reason why people find themselves making major mistakes, stagnating in their walk with God and in their own relationships or abilities is they refuse to listen. It's also one of the primary reasons why people don't come to Christ. They refuse to listen to His voice tugging at their heart, His word in Scripture or His words that coming out of the mouth of the Evangelist. Exodus 23:22, 2-Kings 17:14, Job 15:8, Job 33:33, Job 33:12, Proverbs 1:5, Proverbs 12:15, Proverbs 18:13, Proverbs 19:20 & Luke 8:17-19 Just to list a few
Never get mad at the blind man! If you were sitting at a bus stop and a blind man came by and tripped over you, would you say, "You stupid blind man, watch you're going!" Of course you wouldn't say that. Most likely you'd say, "Oh I'm so sorry, are you OK?" "Let me help you up." Remember those people we witness to are blind and cannot discern the things of the spirit because they are blind to them. Be patient kind, loving and gentle as you instruct and reprove them. 1-Corinthians 2:14, 1 Peter 3:15, 2-Timothy 4:2 & 2-Corinthians 4:4
Be wise as a serpent, but harmless as doves. This is one of the things Jesus commanded the twelve as He sent them out into the world to be His witnesses. Remember, we are sheep in the mist of wolves. When someone is angry, hateful or despises you, do not respond in kind but with kindness, gentleness and with respect. This also applies to dealing with officials, authority figures or the police. God resists the proud and so should we. Part of being wise as a serpent is to not purposely put yourself in harms way by going to places that are obviously dangerous where people who are God haters, despisers of good and of a reprobate mind and then taking them head on while trying to force feed them the Gospel. Pick your fishing hole wisely and be cunning, crafty, witting and even funny. Standing up in the midst of big crowds of people who hate God and love their sin and calling them names or screaming things at people like, "You're heading for Hell unless you repent" accomplishes nothing and does not exemplify Christ or obey the clear in instructions He gave us as witnesses. As Christians, Seed Sowers and Open Air Preachers we are to reason with people in Love and plead for their souls. If they can't see the tears in your eyes, let them hear them in your voice. Proverbs 16:16, Matthew 10:8-24, Matthew 11:25-30, Luke 9:3-5, Romans 8:6, 2-Timothy 2:22-26 & 2-Timothy 3:1-17
Don't Cast Your Pearls to Pigs. If someone isn't ready to hear or doesn't want to hear it, let them be and move on to the next person. Remember the thief on the cross who mocked Jesus and made fun of Him? Remember what Jesus said to him? Nothing! If you try to force people to hear the good news who have no interest or even worse, despise or even hate God. If you do this you can expect them to do exactly what Jesus said they would do, "Turn on you and tear you into pieces". So take a tip from the Master and look for those who have ears to hear and a heart that's ready to receive the great news that Jesus is Lord and died to save them from their sins, death and Hell. Matthew 7:6, Matthew 10:14, Matthew 13:15, Acts 28: 26-27, Ephesians 4:18
You must remain humble in your walk, but bold in your witness. If Satan can't stop you from sharing your faith he will try to make you proud that you're doing it. The number one thing evangelists struggle with is pride. Pride is to the Evangelist what kryptonite is to Superman. Do not fall prey to your pride but rest and trust in the Lord and let the Holy Spirit do the work. Psalms 25:9, Proverb 3:34, Acts 28:31, Matthew 5:16, Matthew 23:12, Luke 10:19-20, Ephesians 4:2, James 4:10 & 2 Corinthians 4:5
To be a complete Christian and to have a full understanding of all good things you have in Christ, you must actively share your faith. The act of the one (sowing seeds), will enhance all the others (Reading the word, prayer, patience, compassion, fellowship, etc,). In other words, the more you sow, the more you grow. If you want to be successful, you must copy a successful example. So, it stands to reason that if you want to see God work in your life the way He did in the Prophets, John the Baptist and the Apostle's lives, you have to do what they did and take a stand for God and preach His word. Daniel 12:3, Proverbs 11:30, Matthew 6:33, Acts 1:8 & Philemon 1:6
Remember your place in the body. Evangelists are the feet of the body of Christ and while the body can survive without the feet but the feet can't survive without the body. Always stay plugged into your church and maintain fellowship with other Christians. If you aren't there to encourage and to equip the other saints to share their faith, than who will train them up? Remember, it's the sheep dogs job to chase the sheep into the pen and the Shepard's job to tend to the sheep. You are also no better of a Christian than someone who doesn't share their faith. Our most righteous deeds are but filthy rags to God. Isaiah 64:6, Ephesians 2:8, Ephesians 6:15 & Romans 10:15
