Activities
The past year has been an active period for Aurora Lodge during which emphasis was placed on programs directed towards youth.
The Lodge's program of preparing and serving home style meals continued for the residents at Ronald McDonald House and Silver Springs Farm at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition the Lodge sponsors a summertime barbeque at Silver Springs Farm, which is a major undertaking with some 150 hungry guests.
The Lodge got involved in a recycling-project this past year when Ronald McDonald House decided to renovate their kitchen. We made arrangements to retrieve all of their kitchen cupboards and have them transported to a sheltered workshop where they were completely refurbished.
Last year a Pediatric Resuscitation Cart was donated to the Queensway Carleton Hospital's Emergency Trauma Center. We were advised that when the cart arrived at the hospital it was so new that the medical staff who would be using the equipment had to take a special pediatric resuscitation course before they could use the cart. Staff from other hospitals in the area visited the ER department to inspect the cart with the hopes of acquiring comparable equipment.
In June our Lodge sponsors the Children's Fish Derby along a stretch of the Rideau Canal. Children are awarded a ticket for each fish caught and released. At the conclusion of the event, some individual prizes are handed out as well as six two-wheeled bicycles. The derby attracts some 800 children up to 121 years of age.
Several of our members volunteered to help the Canadain Cancer Society staff their Daffodil Day tables at the local shopping malls and high traffic stores.
In addition to our usual donations to summer camps and maintaining bursaries at our two local universities, the Lodge expanded its interest in youths at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. The Lodge learned that the hospital was having difficulty financing the replenishment of books in its children's library. A Lodge member met with the hospital's librarian to discuss their requirements, which resulted in the Lodge donating a sum of money for the library's immediate use, and gave the hospital a commitment for an annual dontation to purchase new books for the children's library.
