DHT
DHT is a natural hormone which helps with the development of males during pregnancy. As a man ages DHT starts to treat your hair follicles as foreign objects in the body, rather like an auto-immune response, and in time slowly rejects the follicles at the hair line zone, top and upper back of the head.
Hair follicles at the sides and back are typically not genetically programmed to become sensitive to DHT, which is why most men do not lose hair in these regions.
This is the reason why hair transplantation works. ie. Hair follicles are taken from the areas of the head that are not sensitive to the effects of DHT (donar area - see Hair Restoration), and grafted into thinning or bald areas where they continue to grow hair for a lifetime.
Without a DHT inhibitor either systemically (in the bloodstream) or applied topically to the scalp, each time your hair cycles the hair in the follicle will become shorter, thinner and eventually not grow atall.
