| Wolf and Coyote Wolf kept all the game of the country in a cave and brought out one at a time--only what could be eaten each day. Coyote, the impatient one, pestered his older brother until Wolf told him the secret of the cave and Coyote found it. Then he tried to lift the skin on the door only a crack, enough for one animal. But the sight of all those elk, buffalo, and deer, Coyote got excited and let the opening gape as wide as his mouth. All the animals pounded out in a crush of hooves and dust, Coyote shot but hit nothing. Too late, he rushed about at the remaining deer, trying to herd them back into the cave. One tiny deer his behind a shrub; Coyote triumphantly drew his bow and shot at it, just as Wolf came up.
Coyote was not discouraged. He proudly served his deer to Wolf, saying, "Well, it looks like the animals have found new homes. How can we hunt them now?"
Wolf, of course, had magical powers.
"We put sagebrush into piles" he replied. "Soon the piles will fill with rabbits."
He warned Coyote not to grow careless and let the Indians catch him as he hunted. Coyote remembered his instructions for a few minutes. He heaped sagebrush into piles; soon they were full of rabbits. But instead of taking them home to share, as Wolf would have done, Coyote ate them all on the spot.
Now that Coyote's stomach was gull, he wanted to play, not work. The Indians spotted and pursued him, and Wolf had to rescue him, getting killed in the process. Poor Coyote had to spend years learning the discipline and resources to take revenge and bring home his brother's remains so that Wolf could return to life.
