Olivia stood in shock as she watched her sister tap her three hundred dollar Jimmy Choos against the porch. She didn’t know if she had the strength to deal with her after spending most of her morning doing Community Service. If anyone could make a day of Community Service seem like a walk in the park, it was her older sister.
Why was she even in town? After the fight they had last time, she thought she wouldn’t see Nola for at least another three months, but luck wasn’t on her side this time. She didn’t hate her sister, but the less time Nola spent around her, the better off she was.
"Listen, Nola I’m wet, tired and I need to change clothes so I can head back to work," she muttered trying to move around her sister. Nola wouldn’t know a decent day of hard work if it jumped up and bit her on her three times a week spa butt.
Nola moved in front of her blocking her path from the front door. Looking over her shoulder, she glanced back at Stone then brought her whiskey colored eyes back to her face.
"Momma Bee can take care of that place while you’re gone and you know it," Nola tossed back staring down her nose at her. "I don’t know why you still bother with it. That’s why I sold my half to you."
"You sold your half of the business to me for the same reason you did the house. You always thought you were too good for Landing Shores and wanted a way out. I gave it to you and you took it without blinking an eye," Olivia tossed back as she felt Stone’s eyes burning into the back of her head. She didn’t miss the look that crossed his face when he spotted Nola standing on the porch.
"Olivia, you knew that I always wanted more out of my life than this place. Don’t be upset that I found a way out and you didn’t. Landing Shores never was a place I wanted to stay and you knew that."
She tried to hold back her comment, but that was so hard to do when it came to her know-it-all sister. "That’s why mother started letting me work in the Bar and Grill when we were younger. She knew how much I wanted to keep the family business going. God, Nola it has been a part of our family for years. I couldn’t let a stranger take over after Mom and Dad died."
Nola stopped tapping her shoe. She uncrossed her arms and rolled her eyes before she looked back down at her. "See, I never had that passion flowing through my veins like you do. Didn’t I come to you after that real estate developer offered me all the money for my half? I may think Landing Shores is a step above Mayberry, but I know you love it here."
Olivia heard Stone’s deep chuckle behind her and she tossed him a hard look. She didn’t need him agreeing with her snobby sister. Nola was already confident enough without any help from him.
"Don’t go there. You know how much I hate it when you make that comparison," she tossed back at her sister still wishing she wasn’t standing in front of her.
"Fine," Nola muttered with a wave of her hand. "I have better things that I want to know about anyway. Like why you were rolling around on the ground with that man behind you."
She groaned under her breath. She had hoped her sister would get riled up enough that she’d storm off back the way she came and not ask about Stone anymore, but she should have know better. Nola never let anything go until she got what she wanted.
"What things are you referring to?" Like I really had to ask that question, Olivia thought.
"Don’t play dumb with me when we both know you aren’t," Nola muttered sliding over some on the porch so she could look directly into Stone’s face. "You know I’m still waiting to find out who this man is. And why my straight as an arrow sister was on the ground with him in the middle of Main Street."
Without turning her head away from Stone, her sister looked at her from the corner of her eye. "I know he isn’t your boyfriend because Momma Bee would have called me bragging about it."
Olivia tried to send a silent message to Stone through her mind to keep quiet. Unfortunately the sound of his voice behind her made her realize her plan didn’t work. She prayed her sister didn’t tear him apart and send him running for cover.
She tried not to flinch as his still slightly damp body brushed hers as he stood next to her and looked up at her sister.
"Hello, I’m Stone McLean," he muttered extending his hand.
Nola glanced down at Stone’s hand a few seconds before she shook it. "Nola Baxter-LaFleur, I’m Olivia’s gorgeous older sister," she replied before removing her hand from Stone’s.
She tried not to feel slighted as Stone’s mouth kicked up into an easy smile making his blue-green eyes sparkle. She should have known he was a ladies man. Now she was stuck doing Community Service with him while fighting her attraction to him.
"LaFleur…Are you married to the plastic surgeon Nicholas LaFleur from West Palm Beach?"
Olivia watched her sister’s dark eyes light up at the mention of her husband’s name. Anytime Nola could talk about her wealth, she did it with pleasure. "Yes…I am. I see you have heard of him."
Stone took a step closer to her sister and his smile widened even further. "Yeah… a couple of the flight attendants at the company I work for had some work done by him. I thought I recognized his work when I saw your face."
Olivia had the hardest time trying not to burst out laughing at the fire that jumped into her sister’s dark eyes. Well, she just had to fix something extra special for Stone at the Bar and Grill tonight. He was the first man to find a way to make her sister not love being married to a plastic surgeon. She always thought in the back of her mind that there was something a tad bit different about Nola’s face structure.
"I’ve never had anything done, Nola snapped after she regained her voice. "I’m a natural beauty."
Looking back over his shoulder at her, Stone winked then turned back to her sister. "Don’t worry about it. I wouldn’t have noticed if my co-workers hadn’t shown me their before and after pictures. I can understand why you would start a little early. It must be hard having a baby sister as stunning as Olivia."
She was really enjoying how Stone was giving it back to her sister, but she needed to get Stone out of the line of fire. Because once Nola got over being one-upped by Stone, he wouldn’t stand a chance against her.
Placing her hand in the middle of his back, she fought off the shock waves of how good his bare skin felt to her fingers. "Stone, why don’t you go inside and get something cool to drink while I talk to my sister."
"Are you sure?"
She wouldn’t let him know how much his concern touched her. "Yes, I’m sure. There should be some fresh lemonade in the refrigerator."
"All right," he replied easing past a still fuming Nola. "Let me know when you’re ready to leave and I’ll walk with you back to the Bar and Grill." After a quick side look at her sister, Stone strolled into the house wearing those tight jeans like no one’s business. She didn’t want to tear her eyes away.
"I can’t believe you stood there and let him insult me like that," Nola hissed standing in front of her purposely blocking her view of Stone.
Drawing her eyes up, Olivia stared at Nola and still wished she was a hallucination from too much sun this morning. She didn’t hate her older sister, but there were times she wished she was an only child. "You never seem to have a problem taking care of yourself in the past. Why should I start jumping in to help you now?"
"I bet mother is turning over in her grave with that man staying here with you." Nola taunted like she was eight years old instead of thirty-five.
"Did you forget that I run a bed and breakfast?"
"No….I didn’t forget. But isn’t this the time of year the place is closed to guests?"
Damn, she hated when Nola got self-righteous like this. Why wouldn’t her sister tell her what she wanted and leave? It would make her day go so much better, not to mention her whole entire week. She prayed her sister didn’t want to stay for a long period of time because that just wouldn’t work. The world of Nola could only be taken in small doses at a time and she didn’t have time for any unprescribed medicine today.
"Listen, I need to change clothes and get ready for a long shift at work. If you want to continue this conversation follow me inside," Olivia muttered brushing past her sister going into the house.
"Don’t worry about being late to work on my account," Nola exclaimed following her into the house slamming the screen door closed behind her. The loud sound echoed through the house.
She hated how Nola was so disrespectful sometimes when it came to other people things. Her sister knew she’d just got that new door the last time she was here and now she was about to tear it up. "Watch the door. You know that it’s still practically brand new."
"Sorry," Nola sighed behind her. "I should have remembered how protective you are of your things."
"Nola, I truly don’t have time for this. Please tell me why you’re here. Do you want me to watch Layla and Lynn for you?" Olivia mumbled spinning around to look at her sister. "Because if you do the answer is no, I have too much going on right now."
"No…the girls are spending some time with their grandparents."
So, if her sister wasn’t here searching for a free babysitter for her nieces then why had she made a trip all the way here to see her? It sure wasn’t for a heartwarming sisterly chat or a girls’ night out.
"I don’t have time for games. Tell me the reason you’re here Nola."
Looking around the room, Nola walked over to a chair by the couch and took a seat. Crossing her legs she shrugged one shoulder, "There's no need to rush what I need to ask you. I can wait."
Shit, Olivia thought. She could just throw her weekend plans out the window now. Starting Community Service on a Friday wasn’t the way she wanted to start her weekend. However she was still going to close the diner an hour early and start working on some new recipes for the Bar and Grill.
Why did her sister pick this weekend to come for an unwanted visit? She had to find a way to get rid of Nola. She wouldn’t even be any help to her in the kitchen because she didn’t know the difference between baking chocolate and regular chocolate.
"God, you know how much I hate it when you get this attitude with me? Why can’t you ever get directly to the point?"
"Baby sister, you know that isn’t me. I love taking my time making you sweat about stuff. Isn’t that what older sisters are for? Now, go on get dressed and head out to that Bar and Grill you love so much," Nola said getting up from the chair. "I’m going to go upstairs and take a nap. You know that a woman can never get enough beauty sleep."
Walking over to Olivia’s stiff figure Nola gave her two air kisses on the cheek that she was pretty sure went out in the last nineties before she headed upstairs with a faint scent of Chanel No.5 following in her wake.
Olivia watched her sister leave in a state of confusion. If Nola wasn’t here to con her into watching her twin daughters then why did she come all this way? It wasn’t for a nice sisterly visit. Nice wasn’t a word she ever used to describe her sister. Furthermore Nola didn’t bring Stone back up. Her sister never let anyone get the best of her during any kind of verbal confrontation. She just hoped no one said anything to her sister about her community service while she was here. Nola hated going into town and having everyone fawning all of her. She still thought the people of Landing Shores weren’t in the same class as her.
Looking down at her wet and dirty clothes, Olivia shook her head at how her day had turned out. When she rolled out of bed this morning pissed at Stone for getting her involved in doing community service that she still felt that she didn’t deserve, it never crossed her mind it could get any worse, but she was wrong. Now she was stuck with Nola for God knows how many days until her sister decided to tell her what she wanted.
Walking across the floor she headed upstairs to her bedroom to get out of the clothes and finish up what hours she could at her first love. She just hoped she had enough energy to deal with everything she had going on without losing her mind.
