Waterford & Suir Valley Railway

Last Chance to Enjoy the “Sunset Express”

The Waterford & Suir Valley Railway Company has enjoyed a third successful season.   One of the biggest successes this year was the “Sunset Express” held the third Thursday of each month.

This is a truly unique experience. Guests arrive to a warm welcome at Kilmeadan Station.  The atmosphere is celebratory as you sip chilled champagne, indulge in Wexford Strawberries and listen to a wonderful mix of live music.  The train departs at 7.30pm sharp from Kilmeadan Station.  Your journey takes you through the countryside, then journeying for two mile between Mount Congreve Gardens and the River Suir.  The route then follows the river, past lime kilns and the Woodstown Viking Site to the right of the train. Amongst the trees you can see the WIT development in Carriganore.   The route then follows the original Waterford to Dungarvan route in towards Waterford South Station in Bilberry, passing the turn for the Red Iron Bridge at Gracedieu Junction.    The journey ends just before Bilberry Bridge within sight of Waterford City and across from Iarnród Éireann’s Sally Park Goods Yard.

On the return journey you can watch the sunset as you get magnificent views of the majestic River Suir.  The round trip lasts just over an hour, returning to Kilmeadan at 8.35pm.   Thursday 15th September is the last chance to catch the Sunset Express this year.  Tickets are €10.00 and bookings are now being taken at the station on 051 384058.

The railway is operating the regular weekly schedule until the end of September   The train schedule operates Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 11am to 4pm, Friday 1pm to 3pm and Sunday 12noon to 5pm.   Advance bookings for these trip are not necessary.   The train departs Kilmeadan Station on the hour.  For further information please contact Maria or Robert on 051 384058.   Web site : www.wsvrailway.ie

Cavan & Leitrim Railway

Have you ever fancied helping to run a railway? Would you like to learn to drive a train, be a guard, restore old vehicles or generally help on the railway. The Cavan and Leitrim Railway is the only volunteer run preserved Steam Railway in Ireland. It's operated by volunteers from the old terminus at Dromod in County Leitrim where trains run on a half mile of track. We also run a transport museum where besides our collection of railway vehicles we also have a collection of old fire engines, buses, aeroplanes and other vehicles. Our volunteers do a variety of jobs and work varying hours totally dependent on the time that they are able to give. Some volunteers do several weekends a year others come to help out with big events a couple of times a year.
