Chinese Characters

Introduction

Why learn Chinese characters?

Koreans have a 24-letter alphabet called hangul (??); however, until relatively recently in their history, most literate Koreans wrote Korean in Chinese characters, not hangul. Even though Koreans no longer write their language in Chinese characters, approximately 70 percent of the words in the Korean language are based on Chinese characters. Therefore, if a person knows Chinese characters, that person will have an important key to building a strong Korean vocabulary.
