Breastfeeding

You read tons of books on childbirth and attend classes and prepare for one day in your lifetime that will effect many other days to come. But ironically we fail to read and attend classes that help us with parenting and breastfeeding. Breastfeeding may last for years, and parenting will keep you involved for a lifetime. If you have a problem that is out of the ordinary and need a lactation consultant, please check out our services in this area.

One group that influenced us greatly and helped us to establish a great nursing and parenting relationship with our children was La Leche League.

This is an organization of women helping women. It is a volunteer organization whose sole purpose is to promote breastfeeding and help those who desire to do so do it with ease. Their mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed by providing mother to mother support. They encourage and inform women in ways that is so needed in today's fast paced world.

We personally don't think we would have had the relationship with our nurslings that we have been able to have without the help from such women in our lives. The influence has transended many other areas of our lives as well.

We are actively involved with the North Gwinnett (Tamara is one of the leaders of this group) and Dacula groups in the Atlanta Metro Area. Teresa has exhibited at the Area State Conferences over the years and even spoke at the State Conference a few years ago.

On our resource page you will find books and links to web sites that will help you with breastfeeding. But the involvement that comes from attending a group is far better than reading the information. Many women find some of their best friends out of attending these monthly meetings.

If you are interested in attending a group, here is the link to the Georgia LLL. If we can help you find a leader in your area, give is a call.

The meetings are monthly and involve four topics. One of which is discussed each month. The series is continual. This is a list of the four topics:
  • Advantages of Breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding and Family Dynamics
  • Art of Breastfeeding and Overcoming Difficulties
  • Nutrition and Weaning

Our suggestion is that you attend prior to the birth of your baby. But, if that is not possible, attend as soon as you can. You need not be a member to attend, although there are some benefits to membership that you would certainly enjoy.

Here is a link to some awesome handouts provided by another doula but written by Dr. Jack Newman. They cover numerous issues that may help you in your journey as a breastfeeding mom!
