| Some CPAP Basics Many people take to CPAP with little or no difficulties while others find it hard to master. A lot of the problems through trial & error can be overcome. Here are some simple hints & tips that will hopefully help you get there easily. Firstly you have been prescribed CPAP for a reason. It may sound fear mongering but without it you are putting yourself at real risk. CPAP can be difficult to get used to after all we are not born with masks on our faces but CPAP treatment can improve your quality of life tremendously as your energy levels improve significantly. Some find the prospect daunting in that wearing a mask is not exactly attractive. Ask yourself this. What is more attractive… Someone sleeping peacefully sound & quiet or one that makes snoring & gasping noises all night? Make sure you find the mask that is right for you and that fits comfortably on your face. There should be no soreness or marks caused from usage. Some prefer nasal pillows & others alternate between both. It may be that you will have to pay for the second mask / pillows but if this is what's best for you it will be worth the extra expense. We move a lot in our sleep so ensure that there is ample length tubing that will allow for this. If you find the hose bothersome attach it to the headboard or if you feel like splashing out go for RESMED Corps ‘Swing ArmTM’. If you sleep with your mouth open nasal CPAP is not the best option. If this is a problem, you can get a full face mask which may suit you better. There is a chin straps available which fits under the chin and is fastened with Velcro at the back of the head holding the mouth closed. Many CPAP users prefer to use heated humidifiers attached to their machine as it alleviates the cold sensation of air in the nose and reduces the amount of sore throats that some may experiance. The best way to care for the humidifier is to use DISTILLED water as regular water will damage it. Remember that you must change the water daily so as not to create bacteria. Many insurance companies will not cover the cost of heated humidifiers. Some users say that they tend to ‘choke’ with CPAP. This is a result of trying to breathe through your nose and mouth at the same time. A simple tip is to press your tongue against the roof of your mouth (as when you say the word ‘tea’) and breathe only through your nose. Done correctly the problem will be eliminated. CPAP Maintenance Masks, tubing and headgear should be replaced every 6 months – 1 year (many insurance companies will replace only once a year). The CPAP machine should last many years, bearing in mind that you will need to replace the filters on time. Each CPAP system has a different filter. Depending on your environment, you may need to wash it weekly or monthly. Make sure your filter is completely dry before you place it back in the machine. It is important to keep your equipment clean. Wash your mask or nasal pillows at least every other day in dilute baby shampoo & water. Leave them to soak for 10 – 15 minutes, rinsing well and leaving to drip dry. A clean mask will make the experience much more tolerable. The tubing should be washed as above at least weekly |
