Lord Sesshoumaru is the son of  Inu no Taisho, the former Lord of the Western Lands. Little is know about his background. The few things we do know about Lord Sesshoumaru are these:

He dispises humans( yet later in the series is seen in the company of a small human girl named Rin whom he brought back from the dead in an "experiment" involving the Tensegia )
He hates his younger half human brother Inuyasha
He hates his sword Tensegia, an heirloom from his father, which he deems as worthless since he can't kill with it
And he wants to be the strongest demon around
And he wants Inuyasha's sword of destruction the Tetsusaiga, and will try just about anything to get too.

What we don't know is how old he is and where exactly his domain ( the Western Lands ) are. There has been much speculation on the part of the fans on his age. Some say he's several thousands years old to maybe half that. We do know from movie 3, ( and please excuse me if I spoil this for some! ) is that Sesshoumaru was already fully grown when Inuyasha is born, giving credence to the theory that he is several centuries, maybe a thousand years old.

Here are some other statistics on our favorite demon from the West!

Weapons of choice:
Tokijin - made from the teeth of Goshinki, one of Naraku's incarnations, AKA "children". Had to use the Tensegia to bring Goshinki's head back to life as it wouldn't forgable into a powerful sword
Poison Claws/Saliva - deadly poison that resides possibly in his blood in his blood and is able to release it on his own will when facing a foe or his brother.
Whip of Light - Not sure how this is made but speculation on my part is that he is channeling he Chi ( his life energy, if I'm not mistaken ) into a weapon, though not as awesome or as fearsome as his poison attacks, it is still something you don't want to tangle with.

Companions:
Jaken - an annoying toad-like demon that follows him around everywhere, though usually at the risk of his own life ( which is usually all the time!! Especially if a plan he has doesn't work out ). He carries with him something called the Staff of Two Skulls.
Rin - the human girl that follows Lord Sesshoumaru around after being ressurected from the dead after a pack of wolves kill her.
