THE NAME
The Name
The Name are a four-piece band from Peterborough comprising of
Ben McKnight lead vocals
Ian Grahaeme gtr/vocals
Dave Colton bass/vocals
Joe MacColl drums
We did the interview at the Greyhound before the gig on March 6th
HOW DID THE BAND FORM?
Ben: we were all in bands in Peterborough and about may Ian and Joe pulled this band together for the first gig.
WHERE WAS THAT?
Ian: At Vespas in Charing Cross supporting Squire and Teenbeats-that was in May, it was really good- Small Hours and Beggar were there as well.
WAS THAT A MAXIMUM SPEED GIG?
Joe: No Maximum Speed gigs were at the White Hart, Acton with Squire first gig and the Selection second. They used to book us a lot, our manager sent them a few articles but we fell out with them.
WHY WAS THAT?
Ian: We did a couple of gigs with Back to Zero and at Manchester they drew five people- it was really embarrassing, a disaster.
ANY RECORD COMPANY INTEREST?
Ian: We took tapes round Virgin, Polydor, Decca, Beggars Banquet and in the end our manager got us onto Din Disc. We’ve got a single out in April- “You’re gonna Lose That Girl” and “Misfit”.
WHAT OTHER BANDS DO YOU LIKE?
Ben: Chords, Lambrettas, Squire and especially The Scene and Killermeters. The northern mod bands are more authentic- we played with The Scene the other night, they’re good and the Killermeters are really great
YOU’RE GOOD FRIENDS?
Joe: Yeah we met them at Vespas, they rolled up with a crowd of mates, got on stage and played a real blinder of a set. They invited us up to Huddersfield it was good. The northern gigs are best.
IS MOD DEAD?
Ian: It’s not dead up north but there’s always been mods up there. The mods that can change and go on will survive.
WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO YOURSELVES?
Ben: Bowie, Joy division, PIL
Joe: Clash, most New Wave
Dave: Early reggae, early 70’s stuff
Ian: 60’s english stuff especially The Beatles. We all like different things that’s why we don’t do a lot of covers.
