Holy Toledo! Klinger turns Packo's into hotdog chain

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Who'd have thought a cross-dressing nut case with a big schnozz could sell hotdogs? Well, why not?

Max Klinger -- the gown-wearing "M*A*S*H" character always bucking for a Section 8 discharge -- has turned into what is probably the best pitchman Packo's Hot Dog emporium in Toledo.

Jamie Farr, the Toledo native who played Klinger, mentioned his cravings for Packo's Hungarian dogs on just six episodes. But the power of suggestion -- even after 17 years -- has been enough to create a national wiener wonder.

Company president Tony Packo says more than a thousand people show up every summer to grab a dog just because Klinger mentioned them on "M*A*S*H," now in syndication.

Nor is the craze is limited to Toledo. Packo says the company also sends hot dog sauce, spicy pickles and chili across the United States. Internet sales also are taking off, and grocery stores in more than 20 states now carry Packo's products.

From staff and wire reports

NEW YORK -- Hollywood is mourning the death of Larry Linville, best known for his role as Maj. Frank Burns on the CBS television show "M*A*S*H." Linville died Monday of pneumonia at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He was 60.

"He was a wonderful man, a wonderful father, and certainly well prepared for the acting craft," recalled Jamie Farr, who co-starred with Linville in the long-running show.

Linville had been fighting a battle with cancer for years and had been in and out of Sloan-Kettering, the actor's manager said. He had been admitted when a tumor was found on a vocal nodule and in 1998 had a lung removed.

The Ojai, California, native was born September 29, 1939. An actor who'd trained at the Royal Academy in London, Linville had been living in New York.

Along with Farr, Linville co-starred with Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers and Loretta Switt in the show. It premiered in 1972, just after the hit movie of the same name.

Using a blend of comedy, sardonic wit and stark political commentary, M*A*S*H* depicted the lives of the military staff at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, where Linville played a whiny military stickler smitten with the head nurse (Switt).

The TV show that defined Linville's career continued until 1983, but he left after its fifth season. He went on to guest roles on numerous television series, and had roles in the shows "Grandpa Goes to Washington," "Checking In" and "Paper Dolls."

Linville is survived by his wife, Deborah, and daughter Kelly. A memorial service in New York is pending. Linville's remains will be cremated  and taken to Sacramento, California.

IT IS NOW 8 YEARS SINCE RICHARD HOOKER Author. Wrote the novel "M*A*S*H"  DIED Feb.1, 1924 - Nov. 4, 1997 Burial: Hillside Cemetery Bremen, Lincoln County,Maine, USA

Wayne Rogers spends most of his time now as a financial adviser working for other celebrities. Hes also been in afew movies such as Ghost of Missippi

HARRY MORGAN has retired. He's had a GREAT carrer in the field of acting.

Edward Winter, the actor who portrayed Colonel Flagg died on March 8, 2001 in Los Angeles. He was 63. He had a form of Parkinson's called Luey Body Disease which deteriorates the basal cells of the brain. Though he only did six episodes of MASH in five years, and played in numerous pilots, series, films and high profile guest shots on other series, he is consistently recognized as "the crazy CIA guy on MASH." Please help me spread the word to fans of the show. It would be great to read some of the fans personal anecdotes, character quotes and memorable laughs for the memorial service. Thanks in advance.
