Update 8 Nov:2001

Rivet wins with 65% of the vote

Thank you for electing me as your District 3 representative. Now that the campaign is over, the real work starts. I'm still eager to hear your concerns and ideas. Click on the link below to send me an email, or give me a call at 956-6551 to let me know your thoughts.

Elect Steve Rivet

Malabar Town Council

District 3

As a Town Council member, I will work hard to represent all the residents of Malabar, to apply my experience and skills to maintaining and improving the rural lifestyle we know and love. I will tirelessly apply myself to the issues facing our town and listen to the views of all interested residents. I pledge to make myself accessable to, and represent the interests of, all of our citizens.

Update, October 29: Mr. John Detwiler, the incumbent representative for Malabar's district 3, announces his endorsement of Steve Rivet to succeed him. Mr. Detwiler, who has served on Council since 1994, is not eligible to seek reelection due to Malabar's term limitations; he acknowleges Mr. Rivet's experience and commitment to Malabar's future in making the endorsement decision. Mr. Detwiler has worked hard to serve Malabar and done his best to represent the interests of all of our town's residents, and trusts Mr. Rivet to continue his agenda of maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in our town.

See the debate between Steve Rivet and his opponent to be aired November 1st! Tune in to Time Warner cable channel 15 at 7:00 PM to see the "Meet the Candidates" forum hosted by the Melbourne-Palm Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, featuring candidates from several local races.

Update, October 15th: At least you can see Steve discuss his views of the issues in this campaign - unfortunately, his opponent didn't even bother to show up for the forum! What is she hiding? Is she just too lazy to present herself to the public? Is this the kind of person we want to represent us on the Town Council?

Steve Rivet – Positions on the Issues affecting Malabar

I believe that the main issues affecting our town are maintaining our rural lifestyle while improving our infrastructure. I love nature and want to see it preserved. The quality of life in Malabar is my paramount concern. Details of my positions are as follows:

Drainage: This is probably the biggest problem in Malabar today. I will work to aggressively pursue FEMA and other government agency grants to multiply the effects of monies allocated from the town budget to improve the drainage. I will work with our town manager to create and implement a long range drainage plan that will improve the ability to remove storm water in an environmentally sensitive manner without bankrupting the town budget. I have proven my ability to write winning grant proposals and will apply this skill to obtaining state and federal money for Malabar drainage improvements.

Roads: I will work to identify the most cost effective ways of maintaining existing roads and improving the town’s main roads. I will work with our town manager to create a long range plan that will, within 5-7 years, pave all of the major roads in town. I do not believe it is necessary (or desirable) to pave the Lanes. I will never advocate paving a road if the majority of residents on that road do not want it paved. It is imperative that any long range capital improvement town implemented by Malabar integrate road and drainage improvements as interrelated projects. Road and drainage improvements must be planned such that these improvements are within the fiscal capacity of the town. I propose that all newly paved roads include an unpaved horse and pedestrian lane, so that horse owners and hikers can continue to enjoy access to their favorite areas.

Road through Brook Hollow: I support the efforts of our town and the residents of Brook Hollow to prevent a road from Port Malabar Blvd to Malabar Road through the Brook Hollow subdivision. I believe that such a road, with the resultant huge traffic volume (4000 cars/day according to the latest traffic study) would have a major negative impact on the quality of life of a large number of our citizens. I will fight the developer trying to force this down our throats, and I will fight any external force that would negatively impact our way of life.

Recreational facilities: I support the expansion of our park system, of wilderness horse riding, hiking, and bicycling trails. I will be an aggressive advocate for more greenways, and the expansion of the Malabar Scrub Sanctuary. I will pursue these improvements in a fiscally responsible manner, and believe that this also must be part of a long range capital improvement plan.

Zoning: I support existing zoning. I oppose high density housing and want to maintain the flavor of our existing neighborhoods.

 Steve Rivet’s Personal Info:

Born June 1, 1961 in Bay City, Michigan into a middle class family, the first of four children, and attended grade school and high school in Bay City. I won a National Merit Scholarship my senior year in high school and applied it towards the cost of my education at the University of Michigan. I attended the University of Michigan, 1979-1983 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1983. I worked as a television cameraman while studying at the University, and drove a bread delivery truck, worked in a meat market, and worked for Dow Corning Corporation (Midland, Michigan) during the summers to complement my scholarship money. Between the scholarship and working full time in the summers and almost full time during the school year I was able to pay 100% of may tuition and living expenses, graduate debt free, and avoid being a financial drain on my parents. During these years I learned the value of hard work and self sufficiency, and of setting ambitious goals.

I accepted a job with Intersil Corp (then Harris Semiconductor) in June 1983, and have been with the company ever since. I started out as a Product Engineer, and have held engineering and management positions of increasing responsibility; I am now a Sr. Manager in charge of the marketing group of a $100 million product line.

I rented a house in Malabar as soon as I moved to Florida in 1983, and fell in love with the rural lifestyle. I bought my lot in Malabar in 1985 and built my house in 1988.

I attended the Florida Institute of technology, going to school at night to earn my MBA degree in 1992. More importantly however, this is where I met my future wife, Dr. Semen Koksal. We had a long distance relationship for a couple of years when she taught in Louisiana and Illinois. I moved to Illinois in 1994 to work out of the Intersil Chicago office, and Semen and I were married that year. In 1997 our son Denis was born, and we were fortunate enough to be able to move back to Malabar; I accepted a marketing position with Intersil, and my wife a position as a mathematics professor at the Florida Institute of Technology. We had always planned on coming back to the town we love, and I did not sell my house when I was in Illinois. I have spent many happy hours introducing my son to the beauty of nature that can be found in our own backyard.

My many hobbies include hunting, fishing, amateur astronomy and telescope making, ham radio, reading, and working in my yard. I’m looking forward to putting most of that on hold and serving Malabar as a member of our Town Council. Of course, I need your votes to be able to serve our town.

I have worked hard all my life, setting ambitious goals and doing what it takes to achieve them, and will bring that work ethic and determination to my responsibilities as a member of our Town Council. I hope that this brief introduction will give you some insight into my character and ability to tackle challenging tasks successfully. I am asking for your vote – please give me the opportunity to show you what we, together, can achieve.

What's important to you? What are your views on on the issues affecting our town?
