Monumental Inscriptions at Matterdale churchyard

A selection gathered from the graveyard within the church ground of Matterdale.

In Loving Memory of Peter Thomas GOODFELLOW of Matterdale End who entered into rest 24th June 1933 aged 59 years, also of Annie dearly beloved wife of above who died 19th Nov. 1970 aged 82 years.

In Loving Memory of Maud Margaret beloved wife of James BRIGGS who died at Jenny Hill 15th Dec. 1920 aged 49 years, also of James BRIGGS FGI commercial schoolmaster Penrith who died 8th Sept. 1932 aged 60 years, also of their daughters Ethel & Agnes.

Erected by Joseph SHIELD in memory of his dear brother Isaac SHIELD who died at Lanercost Abbey Schoolhouse May 24th 1875 aged 25 years and 11 months.

In memory of John SHIELD, miner, who died at Cobble Hall Matterdale May 26th 1866 aged 56 years, also of Catherine, his wife, died at Backside Jany. 20 1858 aged 45 years, also of Thomas Robinson, their son, who died at High Row Aug. 25th 1855 aged 27 years, also of William & John, their sons, who died in their infancy, also Hannah, their daughter, who died at Turton near Bolton, Lancashire Mar 28? 1870 aged 26 years.

In Memory of the Rev Joseph THOMPSON late incumbent of Matterdale who died April 11th 1842 aged 65 years, also Mary HODGSON, his mother in law, who died Jun. 15 1836 aged 63 years.

In Memory of Benjamin DAWSON of Matterdale End who died July 27th 1869 aged 75, also Mary, relict of the above, who died March 29th 1883 aged 66 years.

In Loving Memory of Thomas BROWN of Matterdale End who died Feby 2nd 1894 aged 64 years also of Sarah BROWN, wife of above who died Feby 11th 1916 aged 85 years.

In Loving Memory of Richard FOTHERGILL of High Row who died May 14th 1904 aged 68 years, also of Hannah, his wife, who died September 26th 1895 aged 65 years.

In Affectionate Remembrance of Esther (Ettie), the dearly beloved wife of Thomas Henry MARTIN, yeoman of Matterdale, who entered into rest Feb 13th 1911 aged 34 years "For ever with the Lord".

In Loving Memory of William TODHUNTER of Dockray who died April 6th 1863 aged 86 yrs and of Ann, his wife, who died June 13th 1869 aged 77 years. Also of Ann, their daughter, who died May 26th 1853 aged 43 years also of William GRISDALE, their son-in-law who died Feb 27th 1865 aged 43 years.

In Loving Memory of Mary, the beloved wife of John WILKINSON of Dockray who died May 29th 1895 aged 73 years, also of the above named John WILKINSON who died Sept 11th 1897 aged 71 years.

Benjamin DOBSON of Troutbeck who died Octr 3rd 1866 aged 66 years. Also of Mary, his wife, who died May 26th 1887 aged 65 years.

Matthew THOMPSON of Penrith, late of Matterdale End, who died November 12th 188? aged 49 years, also of Mary THOMPSON, wife of [above, who died] Feb 28th 1915 aged 75 years.

John WILKINSON of Bank House who died Jan 20th 1867 aged 67 years, also of Agnes, wife of above who died March 6th 1848 aged 36 years, also of Elizabeth wife of Thomas WILKINSON of Bank House who died Sept 7th 1892 aged 45 years, also of the above Thomas WILKINSON of bank House who died Jan 22nd 1917 aged 80 years, also of Tamar WILKINSON of Bank House, their daughter-in-law who died Dec 11th 1896 aged 25 years.

William TODHUNTER, late of the White Horse Inn, Kendal, who died January 1st 1872 aged 49 years, also of Ann, his widow, who died Jany 6th 1874 aged 56 years.

Isaac BROWNRIGG of Brownrigg who died July 23rd 1898 aged 78 years and of Margaret, his wife, who died Feb 1st 1896 aged 76 years, and of Ruth, wife of Isaac BROWNRIGG of Brownrigg, who died Sept 14th 1909 aged 50 years, also the above Isaac E. BROWNRIGG who died March 17th 1920 aged 67 years, also of Margaret E. & Mary Helena, daughters of I.E. & R. BROWNRIGG.

To the memory of Margaret the wife of Edward DAWSON, bone setter, who died Sept 29th 1728 aged 51 years.

In Memory of Joseph HEAD who departed this life at Jenny Hill Sept 13th 1864 aged 63, also of Julia, his wife, who died Aug 21st 1840 aged 43 years. Also of John MARTIN, their son-in-law who died January 2nd 1886 aged 80 years, also of Mary, wife of the above John MARTIN, who died May 8th 1891 aged 65 years.

In Loving Memory of Henry Martin (Harry) WILKINSON who died at Bank Villa 25th May 1929 aged 26 years.

In Loving Memory of Threlkeld SEALBY who entered into rest April 7th 1936 aged 75 years. Also Ann, beloved wife of the above died Oct. 17th 1924 aged 67 years. Also their daughters, Sarah died Aug 22nd 1916 aged 20. Ethel, died May 18th 1904, aged 5. Agnes died Jan 27th 1892 aged 8. Also their infant son George, died Sept. 25th 1885. "Reunited".
