What you can see below are the guys who made the best game ever (MGS of course!) and MGS2 (the second best game ever!). These surveillance shots show how hard they work...er, or not as the case may be! You can also see some of their work.

You're in control!

Here are the controls for the PlayStation version of MGS. The PC controls should be up soon!

D-PAD - Make Snake move in all directions. You can also use the left analog sick for this. On the menu, you can scroll through what's available.

X BUTTON - Crawl button - Press X to crouch down or get up again. On the menu or Codec screen it means cancel. When you're using a FA-MAS or SOCOM and have the weapon button pressed, press X and the D-pad to run at the same time. When using the Scope or Camera, you'll zoom out by pressing X.

SQUARE BUTTON - Weapon button - By pressing the weapon button when Snake's armed, he can fire/throw or set a weapon. When he has no weapon equipped, it can do three things - throw if you just tap square by a guard, drag if you move whilst having square pressed down by a guard, and strangle if you repeatedly press square by a guard. When you've got the Camera equipped it takes a photo.

CIRCLE BUTTON - Action button - Press to make Snake punch and three times for a kick. When next to a ladder he'll climb it. When by an opening in a vent, he'll climb down the ladder. Circle is also the button that you use to select what you want (the opposite of cancel). With the Scope or Camera equipped, it zooms in.

TRIANGLE BUTTON - View button - Press triangle to make Snake see in first-person view. You cannot move in First Person. Use the D-pad to look around whilst traingle is pressed down. You can go into First Person whilst controlling a Nikita missile for more accuracy and whilst using the machine gun mounted onto the jeep in the Escape Route. You can also go into First Person in the torture and whilst fighting Mantis to see things from his point of view.

START - Pauses the game.

SELECT - Gets you into the Codec screen and then out again. Press this during the torture to submit.

L2 - Open up the items menu. Keep pressed down to keep it open. Use the D-pad to scroll through what you've got.

R2 - Open up the weapons menu. Keep pressed down to keep it open. Use the D-ad to scroll through what you've got.

L1 - Select last item/deselect current item. In First Person, use L1 to sidestep to the left.

R1 - Select last weaon/deselect current weapon. In First Person, use R1 to sidestep to the right.

PC or not PC? That is the question!

What game is better? MGS on the PlayStation or MGS on the PC? If you haven't bought MGS yet, you'd better read this!...

Blue - arguing for the PS version, Purple - arguing for the PC version

  • If you've got a PlayStation, this'll easily be the best game you'll own on it!
  • More people have PCs than PlayStations.
  • The controls are easier to master on the PS version.
  • The graphics are better on the PC version.
  • The characters talk about pressing buttons such as circle, x, square and triangle on both versions but it only makes sense on the PS version.
  • You get the VR Missions game included.
  • The PS got MGS first, so half the world already had it.
  • You can save at any time and then continue where you saved rather than at the beginning of the level.
  • MGS doesn't suit the PC as well as it suits the PS somehow. It feels better to be sat in front of the TV as if watching a movie than at a PC as if doing work!
  • You can use cheats on the PC version.

Well, that's the main arguement for and against the PC version. I myself own the PS version, but that doesn't mean the PC version's rubbish, in fact in some ways it's better. You decide! If in doubt (or a huge collector/fan), buy them both!

The main difference between the two versions is arguably the graphics. Compare them in the two screenshots of Snake in the Heliport below...

PlayStation version's graphics                  PC version's graphics.

Notice how the objects are sharper and smoother in the PC game. The radar stands out more and Snake actually has facial features such as eyes. PlayStation 2 actually sharpens MGS for the PlayStation and smooths out the jagged edges. If you want a version of Metal Gear Solid that looks almost as stunning as MGS2, either get the PC version, PlayStation 2 or MGS Integral (Japanese game).

WEAPONS
Used by the Villains in MGS!

Here are the weapons you will find your enemies using in the Metal Gear games...

NAME: Revolver Colt Single Action Army
WHAT: A revolver handgun
USED BY: Revolver Ocelot
DETAILS: Can hold up to 6 bullets in its bullet chamber. Causes bad wounds because of its power. Portable. Slow to reload.

NAME: Flamethrower
WHAT: A weapon that fires fire.
USED BY: Pyro Bison
DETAILS: Fires extremly hot fire from its tank that comes with it. Bison is never seen without it.

NAME: PSG1
WHAT: A very accurate Sniper Rifle
USED BY: Sniper Wolf
DETAILS: Arguably the most accurate Sniper Rifle around. Has five bullets per round. The user may find it hard to aim this weapon accurately because of their heartbeat. If this is the case, Diazepam should be taken to steady the heart rate and help prevent wasted bullets.

NAME: Gatling gun
WHAT: A massive automatic firing gun
USED BY: Vulcan Raven
DETAILS: Normally equipped on jet fighters, but Raven carries it about as if it were a pistol. The ammo barrel that goes with it means that you don't have any problems with reloading. Its bullets are extremely powerful.

NAME: Boomerang
WHAT: A curved piece of wood that is thrown
USED BY: Slasher Hawk
DETAILS: This gigantic but fairly harmless looking piece of wood can cut cows in half. Because of its shape it will return to where it was thrown from.

NAME: Katana
WHAT: Sword
USED BY: Ninja (Gray Fox)
DETAILS: A long sword that can deflect bullets as a means of protection. This sword has a very sharp blade that can cut people up in a matter of seconds and can destroy objects such as locks, glass walls and computers.
