| Haunted Callaway County Fulton State Hospital Above is photo of orininal hospital administration building. The Fulton State Hospital has a lengthy history, one that dates back before the Civil War. It is the oldest mental institution this side of the Mississippi. Supposedly from information that we have gathered there are tunnels which run under the city of Fulton connecting the Fulton State Hospital to the Callaway Court House. From what we understand the tunnels were used to transport patients and prisoners to and from these two places. These tunnels are now sealed off. There are also stories of a dungeon like area in the basement of the hospital, where torturous like treatments were performed on patients many years ago. We have heard talk of people feeling unusual cold spots and sensing presences in this area. For more info on the very interesting history of the Fulton State Hospital visit: http://www.dmh.missouri.gov/fulton/history.htm Location: 600E. 5th St. Other Points Of Interest In The Area: From 5th St. by th hospital turn onto Wood St., this will take you behind the Hospital. There is a hospital graveyard located directly behind the hospital. The area has been closed off to the public for years, but I have heard that they are possibly opening it up. Callaway County Community Hospital There are stories from employees of strange odors such as B.O. and cold spots in one of the hallways. Recently we spoke to an employee of the hospital who reported that the ghosts of two little blond girls haunt the building. He told us that from his understanding the hospital sits on the site of what used to be a plantation, where these to little girls lived and died. On more then one occasion patients at the hospital who where on the threshold of death would ask about two little blond girls. Location: 10 S. Hospital Drive Dark Hollow Road This is a really creepy little road that runs through a thick wooded area, connecting the outskirts of Fulton to the small "blink and you’ll miss it" town of Hams Prairie. This is a can’t miss spot for ghost hunters. This road is a legend in the area. There are reports of strange lights, sounds, apparitions, etc. This road sends out a major "you’re not welcome vibe." A few stories are as follows: * If you drive out to the road at night and turn out your car lights, then turn them back on you will be surprised by a car driving head on with you. You can try to avoid a collision, but it will not do any good. The car will pass through your vehicle leaving you and your passengers covered in blood. The back story to this is that some teenagers were playing blind chicken on the road one night, many years ago and were killed because of it. Now their ghosts return to reenact the tragic deaths. (This sounds like a lot of urban legends.) *If your walking on the road alone you might begin to hear a baby crying. You won’t be sure at first but as you stop to listen the sound will become clearer. As you look around to see where the sound is coming from you will see the apparition of a woman holding a crying baby come gliding toward you from the woods. The apparition will come closer to you holding the baby out as if she wants you to take it from her. Just as she is close enough for you to reach out to take the bundle, she vanishes. *I myself lived in the hollow when I was a child and the place still frightens me. While living in our cabin in the woods my family experienced many strange occurrences. One morning we awoke to find our beagle lying on the front stoop bleeding to death from having his throat cut. Several times we found severed goat heads lying at the end of our driveway. I remember my parents calling the police after we found our dog. The police informed my parents that they had reports of a devil worshiping cult that may use the area for ceremony. We also experienced strange noises in the woods and feelings of a presence. MoonFox * An individual who has lived in the area for sometime told us the story of the ghost of a young man that is believed to haunt the hollow road. The legend states that the boy died sometime in the 50's. He and some friends were playing chicken on the road. One person would stand in the middle of the road while a car drove at them, whoever stood in the way of the car the longest before moving would be the winner. Unfortunately this particular boy didn’t get out of the way in time, and was killed. In some versions of the story he was severely hurt, but his friends left him to die out of fear of getting in trouble. It is said that on occasions people have seen the ghost of the boy while driving on the road. Supposedly he stands in the middle staring at the oncoming vehicle, when the car stops to avoid hitting him it dies and won’t start. The person that reported this story to us said that some years ago a friend of hers had been driving on the road when this happened to him and he had to leave his car and walk out of the hollow. When he returned in the morning his car started fine and he could find nothing wrong with it. Supposedly several people have had this same experience. Location: Take Bus. 54 in Fulton to E. 5th St. ( you’ll know your going the right way if you see Westlakes Ace Hardware) After you pass Westlakes you will come to a 4-way, take right. You will now be traveling on St. Rd C towards fairgrounds. Continue on Rt.C until you come to Meadow Ridge Apt. (large apartment complex on left side of C). Turn left on gravel next to Meadow ridge. Follow to first gravel on right, this is Dark Hollow. If you follow Dark Hollow straight it will take you back on to St. Rd. C just outside the little town of Hams Prairie. Other Points Of Interest In The Area: After exiting Dark Hollow back onto Rt.C turn left and follow to the little town of Hans Prairie, there’s an old town graveyard that might be worth checking out. You can’t miss it. Information Posted By Members · The following experience is courtesy of Shannon the creator of a new Yahoo Ghost Hunting group named When Darkness Falls. Shannon has been kind enough to let me share her story here on our board. Well, it seemed to be the topic of everyone's conversation, so of course I had to go take a look see myself. Being a little lean on smarts sometimes I decided the best time to check this place out would be at night. I took Bree and Nermalese with me. At first things were fine. Creepy, but no real impressions. Then we hit one portion of the road where we started to get the chills and tingles, but then it stopped. We made our way the rest of the way down the road with little excitement then flipped a u-ie in Hams Prairie. Cute little town, btw. On the way back up the road I was going really slow and Bree had her window down and was hanging out of it listening to the woods. The bend right past the bridge, Bree yelled, "oh my God," flung herself back in the window and proceeded to roll her window up with a quickness, scaring the every living snot out of Nerm and myself. she reported hearing something running next to the car in the woods. Once we finally got our hearts situated in some semblance of their normal positions we made our way down the road and decided it would be a great idea if we went back down to the spot where we got scared and try and take an objectionable looksee. By this time the hair on my arms was standing on end and I had chills so bad that I was shaking. We were seeing shadowy things darting across the road (both on and above). It felt like we were being watched as well. We got down to the bridge and turned back around and made our way up the road for a final round. I kept checking my rearview because it felt like there was something back there. About that time, bree starts to question Nermal about whether she was smoking and then she goes "never mind. I just saw your cigaretted and that wasn't it." She proceeded to fill us in on a large orange and red orb that she had seen next to the car. We decided that we had pressed our luck enough and left for the evening.
Callaway County Court House Original Court House Current Building We have heard stories from employees of the Prosecuting Attorneys office that the court house is haunted by a ghost named Celia. Celia was a slave who was rapped by her master, who she later killed. Celia was hung outside the court house for his murder. Now she visits the attorneys office , from what we’ve heard, she seems to like to hide paper work from the office staff. We were told by an ex- employee that they were unable to find a file shortly after starting work with the office. After looking around the employee asked another lady for help. Her co-worker told her not to worry it was Celia moving things again and that the paper work would show up soon.
