Temptations, Four Tops Come To McCallum Theatre The Temptations and The Four Tops, bring the best of the Motown sound and their chart-topping hits to the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at 8:00pm. With a reputation as two of Motown's supergroups, The Temptations and The Four Tops entertain with flair, flash and class, and smooth-stepping choreography. For more than forty years, The Temptations have prospered, with smash hits and sold-out performances throughout the world. The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, The Temptations began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn't until 1964, however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced "The Way You Do, The Things You Do" turned the group into stars. An avalanche of hits followed, including "My Girl," "Since I Lost My Baby," "Get Ready," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "I Wish It Would Rain," "Treat Her Like a Lady," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," and many more. No matter the change in personnel, The Temptations have remained true to their tradition. The current Temptations are Otis Williams, Terry Weeks, G. C. Cameron, Ron Tyson, and Joe Herndon. The Four Tops have been impressing audiences since Levi Stubbs, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Abdul "Duke" Fakir and Lawrence Payton got together in 1954. Berry Gordy signed them to Motown Records, and hit after hit followed, starting with "Baby I Need Your Loving," and continuing with songs like, "Reach Out, I'll Be There," "Standing In The Shadows of Love" and "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)." In 1972, The Four Tops changed labels and the hits kept on with "Ain't No Woman (Like The One I Got)," "Keeper Of The Castle" and others. Through it all, the group stayed together for forty three years, something that is unmatched by any other group. In 1997, Lawrence Payton died and the group continued with the remaining members. In 1999, Theo Peoples and Ronnie McNeir joined the group. When Obie Benson died in 2005, the group was joined by Rokie Payton, the son of original member Lawrence Payton. The results have been magical, showing the group is still the tops. The Temptations and The Four Tops will perform at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California, on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at 8:00pm. Tickets are priced at $85, $75, $55, and $45. -- www.mccallumtheatre.com Stepping Out gala (The Tempts Review) Motown memories and medical maestros shared the spotlight at Heart & Soul, the 15th annual Stepping Out gala hosted by St. Joseph's Hospitals Foundation. The "Heart" refers to more than $250,000 the event raised for cardiac programs at Tampa's three St. Joseph's hospitals. "Soul" is what kept 700 guests dancing to the Temptations Review, featuring Dennis Edwards, who joined the original Temptations in the late 1960s. Foundation chairwoman Elaine Shimberg and gala chairmen Dennis and Lisa Pupello honored three dedicated physicians: Lazaro Hernandez, George Haedicke and Cameron Tebbi onSaturday at the Hyatt Regency Tampa. The hospital's auxiliary members were recognized for 50 years of volunteering. Emcee Dick Crippen, working hard to rally bids, could have gotten a boost if the band had sung the legendary hit Ain't Too Proud to Beg as he auctioned four items, including the Fairmont Canada vacation for $8,600 to Richard Duveneck.
