Soke Masaaki Hatsumi

  • Masaaki (Yoshiaki) Hatsumi was born in Noda-shi on 2 December 1931.
 
  • Masaaki Hatsumi holds the following headmasterships.  He inherited these traditions from his teacher, Takamatsu Toshitsugu.

  • Each year, Soke Hatsumi selects a main theme for the Bujinkan Dojo.  So far, these have been as follows.

1992 - Sword and Taijutsu
1993 - Bojutsu
1994 - Yari, Kodachi and Shinken Gata
1995 - Naginata and Daisho Sabaki Gata
1996 - Ken, Tachi and Katana
1997 - Jojutsu
1998 - Shinden Fudo Ryu Happo Hiken
1999 - Kukishinden Ryu Happo Hiken
2000 - Koppojutsu, Ninja Biken and Teppan
2001 - Kosshijutsu and Daisho Sabaki
2002 - Takagi Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu, Stick and Stone
2003 - Juppo Sessho and Kunai
2004 - Roppo Kuji No Biken, Tanbo and Tachi
2005 - Gyokko Ryu Happo Hiken, Bo and Ken

  • Soke Masaaki Hatsumi has appeared on the cover of many magazines around the world.  Click here to see some of them.

 

  • Soke Masaaki Hatsumi has written a large number of books on the subject of the Bujinkan martial arts.  Click here to see a list.
 
  • On 11 February 1995 - the day of Japanese National Founding - Soke Masaaki Hatsumi was awarded the title of Todo Hanshi (Master Teacher of the Way of the Sword) by Mr Nakazawa Toshi, president of the Zen Nihon Todo Renmei (All Japan Sword Federation).  His certificate and a photograph of Soke Hatsumi with Mr Nakazawa Toshi can be seen in Sanmyaku Volume 3 Number 2.
 
  • On 22 November 1999, Soke Masaaki Hatsumi was awarded the International Culture Award by the Japanese government.  A member of the Imperial Household presented the award, the highest honour given for cultural exchange, to Dr Hatsumi.  A photograph of the occasion can be found on the "Bujinkan Images"page of this web site.
 

 

  • Soke Hatsumi is an accomplished artist, many of his paintings being exhibited around the world in places such as the Louvre in Paris and in Washington.  Click here to see some of them.
