- Masaaki (Yoshiaki) Hatsumi was born in Noda-shi on 2 December 1931.
- Masaaki Hatsumi holds the following headmasterships. He inherited these traditions from his teacher, Takamatsu Toshitsugu.

- On 11 February 1995 - the day of Japanese National Founding - Soke Masaaki Hatsumi was awarded the title of Todo Hanshi (Master Teacher of the Way of the Sword) by Mr Nakazawa Toshi, president of the Zen Nihon Todo Renmei (All Japan Sword Federation). His certificate and a photograph of Soke Hatsumi with Mr Nakazawa Toshi can be seen in Sanmyaku Volume 3 Number 2.
- On 22 November 1999, Soke Masaaki Hatsumi was awarded the International Culture Award by the Japanese government. A member of the Imperial Household presented the award, the highest honour given for cultural exchange, to Dr Hatsumi. - Soke Hatsumi is an accomplished artist, many of his paintings being exhibited around the world in places such as the Louvre in Paris and in Washington. Click here to see some of them.
