The Viking Chronicles

s You May Already Know,....

...I am a teacher assistant and I work in the Resource Room at an elementary school, in St. Louis, Missouri . My main students (the ones I work with the most) are working on their paragraph writing skills
and social  studies.  We spent quite a bit of time recently, studying the Vikings of old. We decided to combine the two subjects together and write paragraphs about the Vikings...We wondered what it would have been like to really BE a Viking??? We found some very good links and did some research on the internet. One of the most interesting links we found was an interactive site at the Smithsonian Institute.  After we had learned quite a bit about the Vikings, they decided to write journal entries as if they were truly Vikings getting ready for a new voyage. The students picked old Norse (Scandanavian or Viking) names for themselves, which you will see here. They had so much fun with the names and our little "let's pretend" game, that they also decided to use those names as their nicknames on this site and the other medieval sites that I manage. They picked a time period that was a bit later that what we had been studying about, but, even though there are no actual records of Viking expeditions to North America etc., during that time, we discussed how it might have been possible that Vikings were still exploring, settling and living in the areas that we covered.  The students have made every effort to make their writings historically accurate, and have included some details that will tell you about some of what they have learned. I hope you will enjoy them. Perhaps after reading these and visiting the above site, you might try your hand at writing some Viking journal entries yourselves!
