This page has been provided so that members can see what is expected from students of the NYIP Digital Course and to assist members of this board to give feedback on the assignment goals.

Specific Objectives for Unit 1

You can focus attention on some subjects by the way you place your camera.

You can focus attention on some subjects by the way you place the subject in the frame.

In this Project, we want you to produce three different pictures by applying these techniques to three different situations.

Note: If you are a graduate of the NYI Complete Course in Professional Photography, or consider yourself an advanced photographer, please visit the Extra Credit section in the Unit One CD Study Hall. Exercise Two in the Extra Credit provides an alternative set of picture-taking assignments for this Unit.

Photograph #1 Photograph one of more persons or objects in bright daylight.

The object of this picture is to give a clear view of the intended subject with as little clutter as possible.

Photograph #2 Make a portrait photograph of one person

It can be an adult or a child. Use the techniques and ideas that you learned in the Weekend Workshop Tape One. You can make this a posed portrait, or a candid.

Photograph #3 Take a photograph from an unusual perspective

Take advantage of the camera’s ability to show us the world from a varied perspective. Take a photograph that looks either up or down on your subjects from an extreme angle. This may require that you lie on the floor on your stomach or climb atop a chair or ride to the top of a building in an elevator. Do what you need to do, but BE CAREFUL!

Photograph #4 Student’s Choice

You may submit one or two photographs of your choice for evaluation. These can be pictures you’ve made recently, or old ones from your collection. If you submit old images, try to make them ones that you think you might like to work on in the future.

Extra Credits

#1 Looking At The Masters

For this assignment, go to --------------------------- and choose three images taken by one or more of the featured photographers. How do the NYI Guidelines apply to the pictures you’ve chosen. Fill in the form we‘ve provided and send it back with your Unit One Photo Project.

For Advanced Photographers

Option #1 Write your own assignment

Feel free to send us four of your best photographs, including one that is taken from an extreme viewpoint.

Option #2 Four Tough Ones

#1 Low Light

Send us a low light photograph made with high-speed film, Candle light, night street scenes, and fun indoors.

#2 Backlight Subject

Handle a tough subject in extreme backlighting, use a reflector fill or fill-flash as appropriate.

#3 Jumping Subject

Use fill-flash in a low-light situation to capture one or more people jumping into the air. Photograph the jump two ways: from an extreme low angle and also with the camera three feet off the ground. Select the photo that you think works best. Consider using a vertical format.

#4 A Real Portrait

Show your best work as a portrait photographer, even if you hate taking portraits. If possible , select someone you’ve always wanted to photograph but never have. Submit one head-and-shoulders and either a head-to-waist or head -to-foot version. Explain why you posed the subject the way you did and how you arranged the lights and why.
