Apess William (1798-1839) Pequot Tribe

At age five was sent to live with the Furmans in Colchester Conn.

Served in the war of 1812

Wrote an autobiography  "Son of the Forest" (1829) was the first autobiography written by a Native American

Married Mary Wood of Salem Conn. in 1821 they had 3 children Elisha or William, and two daughters who's names are unknown.

Became ordained as a Minister in 1829-1830   by the Protestant Methodist Church

 

Bender Chief (1883- 1954)

Ojibwa Professional Baseball player and coach

Charles Albert or Chief  Bender was a major league pitcher durning the twentith century . He played 12 seasons 1903-1914)

Born in Minn. graduated from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School , he was born of a German American Father and an Ojibwa mother,

Married Marie Clements in 1904 they had no children

Bender was electeed into the Hall of Fame in 1953 one year before he died.

 

Black Elk (1863 - 1950)

Olga Lakota Holy man , traditional healer, and visionary.

Born December 1863 on the Little Powder River, son of elder Black Elk and White Cow Sees . He was the fourth generation to bear the name Black Elk

Made his home on the Pine Ridge Reservation

Was baptised by christian misionary's December 6, 1904 at the Holy Rosary Mission

Black Elks vision became the message to the Lakota Nation
