Please take time to Read this!!
From today on I strongly recommend all my members to HIDE their email address.
You will have people who sign on to your groups for the sole purpose of stealing email address. If you receive email from people that you don't know, as a precaution don’t open it and block their address.
When you make a passport it automatically has some kind of email address attached to it. When you then join a group your membership in that group is attached to that email address. Therefore if someone hacks into that email address, if they then enter the group area using that MSN address they will see the list of groups that you are in and will be able to do anything there in your name that you could do, including deleting your group pages or deleting your groups. You therefore need to keep that email address hidden and don't give it out to people in the groups that you are in.
When you JOIN a group you ALSO have the ability to enter another email address in a box, which asks you which email address you wish to use when participating in the group. This box enables you to choose a different email account for posts to be sent to if you want. You must enter something into that box or you can't join the group, but it can be the MSN address that is attached to your passport. Make sure that you UNCLICK the box next to your email address to ensure that that email address does NOT appear on your profile. If that one is visible then, even if it is not your MSN one it can still be used by a troublemaker to write posts to your groups which look as though you have written them. A troublemaker can post filth and garbage to your groups if they know that email address.
If you want people from the groups that you are in to be able to write to you personally, get a totally different email address and enter it into the section of your profile where you give people a little bit of information about you. That section does NOT connect an email address to your community membership and so any email address put in there, if hacked into, can't do any damage to your groups. It also can't be used to 'spoof' messages from you to the message board.
I have seen some solicitors and other people who haven’t gone to cathedral post messages at our message board. I have taken action to make sure that these people never post irrelevant messages again. Now that we have over 90 members and are one of the most active high school sites in MSN, we need to make sure we protect ourselves from cyber stupidity. So take action!
Thanx
