Advanced Techniques in Needle Tatting

(Original Advanced Needle Tatting Techniques By Roger aka Freedman - transfered over here from original site- "NeedleTattingWithTatman 2001")   Please keep in mind that these are the way we have taught ourselves to do these techniques. If you should find another way or easier way to do any of these, we would appreciate you letting us know. We will add your way here on the instructions and give you credit for the way you do the techniques.

Hiding Thread Ends - These are a few suggestions I use to hide the ends of the thread. Also how to hide ends working with two colors.

Adding On Thread - Our way of adding new thread if you start to run out on the needle, and hiding the end. Also another way to add both new auxiliary and core thread.

Triple and Quadruple Picots - Advanced Learn to do the Double First before attempting this.

Ruffled Picot Chains (can also be made for rings and the ruffle is made much like the Node/Twisted stitch.)

Cluny Leaf (and How To Make A Cluny Loom)

Floating or Thrown Off Rings  (this is my way of doing the floating rings, without having to re-thread the needle back and forth)

Dimple Ring Heart  (This is how to make the Dimple to shape a ring to look like a heart)

Split Rings Split rings are easy to make by adding the first half on the blunt end of the needle, un-thread the eye and make the other half on the eye side with the eye thread, re-thread and close. Click the link to see photo of how to, and some help on off center split rings.

Split Chains After leaning the split ring check this out on how to make split chains to climb out. A little on doing the split chain making the split ring and split chain Tree. Also working out of a center motif.

False Picots  False or Mock picots are to help join in area's needed in tatting things as block tatting and climbing out of a ring or chain.

Linked ChainRings  This is a cute little way to link Rings together. They are usually called Linked Chains, but they actually make rings interlocking each other.

Two Color Tatting  Gives a little help using one Needle or two Needles for two color tatting. And a way to knot your work together when using two colors of thread or even two of the same color.

No RW=Reverse Work Method  This technique is making rings and chains without reversing the work and making the knot. This is a nicer look, but do keep in mind you will be using up more thread on the Needle as rings are made with the needle thread.

Folded Join In some cases the folded join is needed so you do not get the twisted picot.

Lock Stitch On Chains - How we do the Shuttle Stitch/Lock Join with the needle.

The Catherine Wheel Join - How to make the Catherine Wheel and joining the chains to make the wheel nice and around.

Padded Needle Tatting - Making padded tatting using a larger core thread and a smaller ball thread to make the double stitches.

Twisted Picots - Decorative twisted picots for decoration or joining.

Downward Facing Picot - Picots that face down on the flat side of your double stitches.

Mignonette Tatting - How to do the Mignonette Stitch and a couple extra web sites to show the different effects it can make.

The Square Ring - Tut. showing how to use Two Needles and two threads to make a ring square. A Large Needle and a Small Needle is used, and the large needle is working off the ball thread. Easy and fun to do once you get the general idea. Would be great for a center motif, or if your adventurous a large doily.

The Onion Ring : The onion ring was introduced in the On Line Tatting Class with Georgia Seitz. This page will tell you how to join the class if your interested.  http://www.georgiaseitz.com
Also many wonderful Class Notes and so much more.
To see the Onion Ring, click on the 2002 Index and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Lots of great info. a Onion Ring butterfly by: Hope Green, a bit of history and more.
The Onion Ring Directions are easy to follow and can be used by both the Needle or Shuttle Tatter.

Beading Idea's: A couple different ways to add beads.

Idea's To Use Up Thread Pieces - Ways to try and use up some of those left over pieces of thread. Make flowers, hearts, shoelace motif.
