This is a Tat-Along motif that Roger made, using the Cluny for a red flower effect in the middle.
And the other is Cluny the Owl, with a cluny leaf center body part.
Cluny leaves look great in a tatted piece but are very hard to hold on the fingers while making. Cluny leaves are made by wrapping the ball thread around your fingers. Holding the piece in your thumb and forefinger, you have to wrap the thread around the middle and ring fingers to make a loop, and also your pinkie.
Sometimes our fingers stiffen up while holding our finger open like this. If you have this problem you can make yourself a Cluny Loom out of cardboard or thin plastic. Click here to see a general idea on how to make a Loom. Also added to the page is a cluny clip, great to use with the shuttle. Sent in by group member, Dean and Noreen.
Ignore the loop around the pinky finger, that loop will pull the work together.
1.Once you have the thread wrapped around your finger, using the needle thread start weaving between the three thread on the middle and ring finger. Weave under - over - under, come back with over - under - over. That makes one DS. continue back and forth for # of stitches. Use your Needle to push the stitches down smoothly as you work. As you work to middle of leaf you will have to make it a bit larger and then work up to top smaller.
Once you have the leaf made, take the loops off hand and FLEX your fingers. When your ready to shape the leaf, 2. Gently Pull the loop that was around your punky. This will close the top loop. As you practice you will know when you have pulled to hard. You want it snug but not to tight.
3. Next, Pull the ball thread and this will pull the excess thread together, again pull gently and shape the leaf.
