How-To Page

1.  View OGG at optimum settings

Set your display mode to 800x600 pixels.  Go to Control Panel (My Computer/Control Panel) and select Display off the list that appears.  Select the Settings tab and move the little slider in the Screen area section till 800x600 appears.  Some operating systems allow you to type in the size or select from a scroll box - just type in or select 800x600.  You should do a restart after changing your display mode.

Set your browser text size to medium.  When your browser is open, Select View, scroll to Text Size and click on it, and then click on Medium.

2.  Open 2 browser windows at once

Opening a New Window so you can copy and paste a graphic is easy. Up at top of screen in the menu bar, you will click on File, New, Window.  A new window will open up to be an exact duplicate of your first window.  In the 2nd window, you can open up your photo album and copy and paste graphics (for example to your message posting).

3.  Copying & pasting graphics, etc. into a message

To post graphics to messages, the graphics MUST be on the web - and in a public (not private) web site.  Have 2 windows open, one being the message you are composing, and the second one will be the photo album graphic that you need.  In the second window, right click on your opened up graphic and select Copy.  Then go to the first window, and insert your graphic into your message by clicking the little icon that looks like a clipboard.  Viola!  Your graphic should now be in the message.

Since the October 6 upgrade, there is a new feature to insert graphics into your messages, list items, etc. directly from your PC.  When in a message reply or creating a new message, click on the little 'Insert  Picture' yellow icon with the mountain on it.  You will get a window with 3 tabs on it.

The first tab lets you pick photos from the Photo Albums of any community that you are a member of, and photos stored in your hotmail account (your id near the top of the list).  This is the same place as the "sent photos" down at the bottom of the list.  Simply click on the community, then the album, and the picture(s) in the album that you want to use, and then hit the Add Photos button to upload them.

The second tab lets you insert photos from your PC.  Click on the Browse button and go to the folder that you have stored your pictures in.  Click on the one(s) you want to upload and click Add Photos.  The photo will appear in the message box.  Be careful using this, because all photos uploaded this way remain in your hotmail account/sent photos.  Always check to see if you already have a copy of a photo in there before uploading it, otherwise you will end up with heaps of duplicates!  So far, there is no way to delete photos from there.

The third tab lets you select from standard clipart collections that MSN provides.  Click on a category, then click on the graphic you want to use, and hit Add Photos.

4.  Saving graphics off the web onto your PC

You need a folder to save the graphics in that you come across while you're surfing the web.  You right-click on the graphic and then click Save Picture As, and click on this folder that you are about to make.  You have to have something to store the graphics in.  Do a right click anywhere on a blank space on your desktop. Click on New, then, Folder.  Name it what you want or just leave it as New Folder.  If you want to change name, right click and choose Rename and type new name and then press Enter.  After all the graphics have been uploaded, you can safely delete this album by right-clicking on it and choosing Delete.  (In the special MSN browser version, you might have to click on Choices to open up a new window).

5.  Creating a new Photo Album

Go to the Photo Album page and click on the Create A New Album option.  You will have to name it something appropriate - give us some idea of whose it is and what it contains.  Choose what option you want of the 3 that are listed (preferably Members may add, edit and delete their own photos). Then click on the Create New Album tab and presto, you have just created your new album.

6.  Uploading graphics to your Photo Album

Have your photo album opened up. Click on the Add A Photo option. It will then show a menu on the left-hand side. Click the folder where you have stored your graphics. The folder will open and and the graphics will be displayed as thumbnails in the right-hand side section. Scroll to the one you want, click on it and then click the Upload button. If you want to rename it, click on the title bar of graphic, and type in a new name and then press Enter.  Make sure your choice is check-marked before you press Upload.

7.  Create a folder in Shared Files

Go to File Cab and click on Create Folder.  Type in a name for your new folder (e.g. Freda's MP3s) - give us some idea of whose it is and what it contains.  Choose what option you want of the 3 that are listed (preferably Members may add files but only edit and delete their own files).  Click Create and bingo - you have a new folder.  This seems to only work for Mgrs now.  Email Auntie if you would like a folder in the File Cab.

8.  Add files to Shared Files folders

Click on the name of the folder to which you want to add files.  Click Add a File.  A view of your desktop comes up - drill down to the folder that the file(s) you want to upload is/are in.  A list of all the files in that folder appears.  You can make the file name column wider if it cuts off part of the file name.  Click the box beside each file you want to upload to put a check-mark in it, then click Upload Now in the tab above the file list.  Depending on the size of what you are uploading, it may take a few moments for your files to appear.

9.  Inserting a link into a word (works for a picture too)

  •  type some text to hold your link (or insert a picture)
  • open a second browser window and surf to the page you want to link to
  • copy the URL from the browser address bar on top of the page - when it is highlited in blue - press control and letter C to copy
  • you can also right-click on an existing link - like a page name in the nav bar, or an album name in the album list, or a picture in an album, or a message title in the message board, etc. - a list appears - click on "copy shortcut" on the list, then proceed to step 5
  • move back to your text that you typed on the other page and highlight it (just put cursor at beginning and hold down left mouse button as you drag to the end of the text) or your picture - select it my clicking it once (when you see the little boxes in the corners and middle of the sides, it is selected)
  • now click on the litte world icon on the toolbar of the message reply screen
  • there is a blank typing box there - put your cursor in that and press control and letter V to paste the URL you copied in there
  • Click on the insert button below the typing box
  • Send your message!
