Our Reviews & Members: Barbara Foster - Learn Needle Tatting Step by Step: This was my first book for needle tatting, truly a step by step guide for leaning the basics of needle tatting. Patterns for how to make a medallion, bookmark, edging and a collar. Rosemarie Peel - Tat Five,Yuletide Tatting, and Bead Tatting: I loved all these books, and found them to have many helpful idea's to make from them. Some of her books are no longer available, but if you find one grab it. She has several other books that I will be getting also. *Rebecca Jones - The Complete Book of Tatting. This book is one that a lot of people call the tatters bible. This book gives the shuttle tatter different ways in which to hold and make the tatted stitches. There is a section in the beginning about needle tatting. This book goes on to some simple starter patterns, talks about joining, hiding ends, working with two threads and two shuttles, josephine knots, ric rac tatting and re-opening a closed ring (this is good for needle tatters when doing rings and thread patterns and for shuttle tatters). There is a section on pearl tatting, tatting with three threads, cluny, roll, beads, and the lock stitch. The book goes on to some very nice patterns. - Well Mary has given this an excellent review and I can only agree with her. *Gun Blomqvist and Elwy Persson - Tatting Patterns and Designs: This book has some wonderful designs in it. There are patterns from the very simple to the advanced. There are even crowns in this book. The patterns are written in a simple easy to follow format. - I also really enjoyed this book, beautiful book of patterns, and ideas. *Anne Orr - Tatting with Anne Orr and Anne Orr's Classic Tatting Patterns are just wonderful books with lots of edgings, doilies (large and small), motifs, and one of the books has baby bonnets. *Janet Carroll - Elegant Tatting Patterns: In Janet's book you get a variety of things. There is some tatting over egg shapes, christmas ornament tatting, some small doilies, including ones that attach to cloth, and edgings. Very nice book. I bought it for the ornament patterns. *Teri Dusenbury - Tatting Butterflies and Tatting Hearts: Teris book on butterflies has some wonderful patterns for jewelry. There is also a great section on doing the larks head knot and the Dora Young Knot. In tatting hearts there is a very good section on tatting split rings with a shuttle and she teaches her stacked butterfly. *Monic Hahn - Christmas Angels and Other Tatting Patterns: This one has a variety of patterns from angels to snowmen to christmas ornaments to stars. There is a very lovely oval doily and some edgings. There are also some collars, hearts, crosses, a water lily. She has also included a couple of napkin rings, a necklace and earrings and the most beautiful umbrella ornament. *Donna Jones (book put out by Annie's Attic) - Learn Needle Tatting In No Time At All: This book has instructions for needle tatting and some very basic patterns to get you started. There is one pattern that looks a little more advanced but I have not done it. It is a 3D bell with crystal beads for the handle. *Vida Sunderman - Tatted Snowflakes: A book full of snowflakes. From the beaded to the plain. I just love the 3D snowflakes in this one. *Lily Qualls Morales - A labor of love: Beyond the fact that Lily has a wonderful doily to do in this book, there is much more. This is a very good book for anyone just learning. There are sections on Abbreviations and Terms, Symbols, A shuttle/thread capacity chart and several sections on how to's including her Larks head knot join. She has some tatted jewelry, some hints on using left over thread, a tatted case for holding business cards and another for scissors, hemostat, needles and more. *Julia E. Sanders - Tatting Patterns: This book is not written in a very easy to follow format, but it is still one of my favorites as it does combine my very first love, crochet, with my new love tatting. There are lots of different types of patterns in this one, including butterflies, baby bonnets, motifs, flowers, edgings, doilies, and the entire alphabet. *Pam Palmer - Dragon, Tatting Treats, and Tatting Treats Two: The dragon book is just that one pattern, ah but what a piece. Tatting treats includes a mouse, pig, snow, a peacock and more. Tatting treats two has a crinoline lady, frog (really nice frog), teddy bear, a cute little rocking horse and more. *Darlene Polachic - Big Book of Tatting: This book has 34 patterns in it. This one also has a tatted lady, and teddy bear. There is also included some butterflies, bookmarks, and other tatting from large pieces to small ones. *Kirstine Nikolajsen & Inge Lise Nilolajsen - The DMC Book of charted Tatting Designs: This book has a lot to offer including a couple of crowns, some collars, and doilies. The thing with this book is there are no written instructions. Everything is charted and you work from those charts. *Chritel Weidmann - 60 Original Lace Treasures: This book has designs from the simple to the complex. The instructions are easy to follow and the patterns are lovely. One nice thing about this one is it has instructions for the floating rings (thrown rings) done with a needle. This book has patterns that are rings/chains and those that are rings/threads patterns. There are patterns that need a knowledge of thrown rings, but not all. Wonderful book. *Cathreine Austin - A New Twist On Tatting: This has some wonderful eye candy in the front of the book. It can give you many ideas for the use of your own tatting. The patterns are all towards the back of the book and there are some very nice ones. In this one there are doilies, a US flag, edgings, and more. *Gary and Randy Houtz - Tatting the GR-8 Self-Closing Mock Ring: This book teaches the shuttle tatter how to do the self closing mock ring. There are no instructions on beginning to tat, this you must know or pick up someplace else. I must say that this is not just a book for shuttle tatters. The patterns in the book are just wonderful. There is a small section in the back on the use of 3 shuttles for doing pearl tatting. |
