From Eight Keys to being a great Group Manager

Group management dont's

  •  Don't tolerate disrespectful behavior in your group.
  •  Don't violate copyright laws
  •  Don't give spammers access to your members

What is copyrighted material?

Well, basically do not upload or post messages that contain photos, music, software or other material protected by intellectual property laws, rights of privacy or publicity, or any other applicable law unless you own or control the rights thereto or have received all necessary consents.

We ran into this head on, when our mail archiver was "put on notice". The copyrighted material on the board had been removed, but the material did go out on e-mail. Don't copy entire pages from websites into your posts.

So, what about fair use?

There is a great article here: http://www.ojr.org/ojr/ethics/1065049186.php

Copyright Issues Present Ongoing Dilemma: To Link or Not To Link?

Also check out the Chilling Effects Clearinghouse!

Recently, we've been seeing some sites that even don't want us putting in weblinks to their sites so that patients can find much needed patient education matierial. Up To Date from the Endocrine Society, along with The Hormone Foundation from the Endocrine Society is one of the major organizations that has this exact information posted on their site(s). The question is, can we link? erg...yes.

Never A Dull Moment

Bottom Line:

If you are  "reusing" or quoting content  from a site, please place a link to the site you got it from. Please do not copy or use large tracts of text if there are copyright stipulations on the site. Get permission first. Do not cut and paste photos from other sites. You can upload non-copyrighted images onto the site, but if the image is copyrighted, you need to get permission. All you have to do is ask.

If you are combining a number of articles or bits of info you have found on the web, and substantially rewriting it into a new article for your site, it's yours. Please give credit for the original ideas in a bibliography that references the work.
