Often the symptoms of thyroid disease--such as weight gain or fatigue--come on gradually, and people think they're just feeling tired or that they're just getting older.  This book helps patients understand how thyroid disorders are diagnosed, the various treatment options, and what to do if a symptom lingers despite treatment with standard medications.  I've included important information about the thyroid gland as it relates to all your hormones.

Brain Longevity: The Breakthrough Medical Program that Improves Your Mind and Memory

By By Dharma Singh M.D. Khalsa (Author), Dharma Singh Khalsa, Cameron Stauth..

ISBN-10: 0446673730
ISBN-13: 978-0446673730

Book Description
In Brain Longevity, Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa demonstrates that the human brain can be cared for, strengthened, and enhanced through an integrated program of diet, lifestyle changes, and medicine. This breakthrough medical program shows us how we can work to improve memory and diminish the effects of age-associated memory loss, keeping our minds youthful, creative, and dynamic.

This revolutionary (and fascinating) book explains how we can postpone the aging ofour brains and instead develop extraordinary brain longevity, with memory, concentration, energy, and learning ability even better than what we enjoy in our youth. The BRAIN LONGEVITY program is a four-step plan using modern complementary medicine, from Eastern and Western traditions, and including nutritional therapy, stress management, exercise therapy, and pharmacology, all designed to overcome "normal" brain aging. The program is designed to control a specific adrenal hormone, cortisol, which clinical testing has shown to be toxic to the brain and to become present in excessive levels as we age. Excess cortisol (which is often caused by stress as well as "normal" aging) diminishes the abilities of our brain cells and savages the body's production of hormones, including those that regulate our mood and our sex drive. Dr. Khalsa's holistic program reverses this toxicity and allows the brain to return to vibrancy and optimum mental ability.

Special Issue of  Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics 1998, Vol. 67, No. 3

Table of Contents

An up-dated survey enriched with case illustrations

This publication derives from the collaboration of endocrinologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and patients' advocates. Pituitary diseases, such as hyperprolactinemia, Cushing's disease and growth hormone disturbances, entail a significant degree of psychological distress and invalidism. Awareness of these problems have led to the development of patients' associations such as the Pituitary Tumor Network Association. This is the first specific monograph on the topic and provides an updated survey - enriched by case illustrations - of the main psychological problems which patients with pituitary disease may encounter. It will be of interest to both professionals, such as endocrinologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and psychiatrists, as well as to patients.

The PTNA issued this as a stand alone book, but you can order a reprint of the individual article for a reduced fee direct from the publisher.

By David Buchholz.

ISBN-10: 0761125663
ISBN-13: 978-0761125662

Although headaches are natural, they are not necessary, argues David Buchholz, a professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In his Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Headaches, Buchholz counsels severe headache sufferers to avoid quick fix painkillers, which can cause rebound headaches. For a more holistic approach, minimize triggers like caffeine, perfumes, certain foods and stress and, for hardcore cases, use preventative medications such as tricyclic antidepressants, calcium channel blockers and others. Buchholz also discusses common misdiagnoses of migraine symptoms and challenges the myth of tension and sinus headaches (these are usually migraines, he argues).

I'll Carry the Fork!: Recovering a Life After Brain Injury

ISBN-10: 0933670044
ISBN-13: 978-0933670044

Kara Swanson's remarkable story provides a very meaningful glimpse into the life of someone who has been changed by a head injury. By sharing her personal triumphs and challenges she gives us a new sensitivity for the countless people and families who focus each and every day on their recoveries. Both Kara and her book are special.

A patient of mine had a traumatic brain injury.  She wrote a book called I'll Carry the Fork.  Her name is Kara Swanson.
It is her own story about dealing with a brain injury.  I think that since so many of us have been affected in similar fashion that this book could be useful as well.

It's Not a Tumor

By Robert Wiedemeyer, M.D..
ISBN: 0964740796
"It's not a tumuh"...a line I always laugh at...remembering now-Governor of CA, Arnold Schwarzenegger's reply to the kid in "Kindergarten Cop"...when he says he has a headache.

Well...I read this book to know what doctors may say...seven years ago I was told that my tumor was "incidental" and all my symptoms (including blurry vision, nausea, dizziness, memory loss, etc.) were due to "stress." So, I ignored my symptoms for five years...and now the tumor is twice the size it was and I have dozens more symptoms.

So...I decided to learn what else could be causing my symptoms... This is a good book to read if you have not been diagnosed. You can arm yourself with information and research your specific symptoms.

I believe the tumor and hormonal imbalance are directly related to all our symptoms. Reading this book will give us a headsup as to what our doctors may say...so we can research and be prepared to share our opinions.

You will find this book interesting and informative-guaranteed!

Living Well with a Hidden Disability

By Stacy Taylor.
ISBN: 1572241322

I recently read a book entitled Living Well With a Hidden Disability by Stacy Taylor. The book focuses on every area of yourlife that is affected by your hidden disability including relationships, work, finances, emotions, medical issues, etc. The book covers those of us undiagnosed and searching for answers...and those of us diagnosed and treated. It even considers the reactions of doctors and what we can do to find the best care and treatment.

I found the book to be very interesting, it placed things in perspective for me. We are living with a "hidden disability" that affects our daily life. I do not know about you, but my life has turned upside down since I started searching for a diagnosis. This book has helped me realize just how much I have changed and how I can regain a "normal" life. Searching for answers, searching for a diagnosis is very frustrating. The book offers ways of dealing with the stress associated with living with a hidden disability.

I encourage you to read Living Well With a Hidden Disability. I believe it has the potential to help many of us deal with our health problems.
Take care.

Man Made: A Memoir of My Body

By Ken Baker.
ISBN-10: 1585420832

Ken Baker was a working-class boy from Buffalo, New York, who dreamed of playing professional hockey; his idea of masculinity was formed by a father who chain-smoked, warned his sons that "girls will ruin your life" (he had to marry the author's pregnant mother), and sneered at doctors' warnings to mend his bad habits--"You gotta die of something." But Baker had a tumor in his brain that flooded his body with the female hormone prolactin; he leaked milk from his nipples and could hardly ever have an erection. His wince-inducing memoir pulls no punches and uses no euphemisms in telling what it was like to be a sexually dysfunctional man in a sex-saturated society.

    Pituitaty Disorders: Comprehensive Management

    By Krisht, Tindall.
This is an excellent overview of the pituitary gland from multiple points of view. The endocrinologic, neurosurgical, and radiologic approaches to pituitary disease are all discussed. The purpose is to present a detailed review and update of the current knowledge of the pituitary and its disorders, and this objective is admirably met. This book is thorough, concise, and clear. Useful clinical information is emphasized rather than basic science. Therefore, it is an appropriate reference for its intended broad audience of medical students, internists, endocrinologists, gynecologists, pediatricians, neurologists, neuroradiologists, ophthalmologists, and neurosurgeons. The contributors are all well-known experts in their fields, lending this book a great deal of authority. The scope is broad, as all types of pituitary tumors and sellar masses are covered. The illustrations are useful and clear, and the references are about as up to date as one might expect for a published text. Although it is not detailed enough to be a comprehensive reference for any single specialty, the broad scope of this book is what makes it an excellent addition to both internists' and specialists' libraries.

    Prolactin (Endocrine Updates, Volume 12)

By Edited by Dr. Nelson D. Horseman.
    List Price $285.00
    New and used from $70.00

    Book Description
This is the first volume in several decades to be devoted to all the aspects of Prolactin.

Medical management of prolactinomas can be based on our understanding of the physiology of hypothalamic control of the lactotroph. Armed with this knowledge, therapies for prolactinomas are highly successful and well tolerated. Because of the historical and practical importance of knowledge regarding the hypothalamus-lactotroph axis, the first chapters of this volume are dedicated to reviewing the physiology, development, and cell biology of lactotroph regulation. Chapters focusing on prolactinomas and related clinical issues follow these.

Our understanding of the roles of PRL in the integration of maternal physiology is still very incomplete. The merger of genetics, developmental biology, and physiology has offered new avenues to study these essential functions. Several chapters in the text review our current understandings of behavioral, reproductive, metabolic and developmental functions of PRL that relate to maternal care. The fundamental PRL signaling pathways, including relevant kinases, transcription factors, and comodulatory protein findings are reviewed from the receptor level to the nucleus. Prolactin gives a complete state-of-the-art review on Prolactin by the authorities.

The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness

    By By Dr. Gerome Groopman..

    ISBN-10: 0375757759
    ISBN-13: 978-0375757754

Why do some people find and sustain hope during difficult circumstances, while others do not? What can we learn from those who do, and how is their example applicable to our own lives? The Anatomy of Hope is a journey of inspiring discovery, spanning some thirty years of Dr. Jerome Groopman’s practice, during which he encountered many extraordinary people and sought to answer these questions.

This profound exploration begins when Groopman was a medical student, ignorant of the vital role of hope in patients’ lives–and it culminates in his remarkable quest to delineate a biology of hope. With appreciation for the human elements and the science, Groopman explains how to distinguish true hope from false hope–and how to gain an honest understanding of the reach and limits of this essential emotion.

The first edition of the book has sold well, both in the trade and to industry. The book has also been a critical success. A complete overhaul of this book makes it up-to-date, more clinically applicable, and slightly smaller. Toward that end, contributors have been instructed to emphasize the clinical utility of the information, and to condense the material where feasible. Some weaker chapters will be jettisoned or reassigned, while a new chapter devoted to surgery of the pituitary will add an important therapeutic dimension missing in the current edition. New information on actions of hormones and new drug therapies (in particular dopamine agonists) for treatment of pituitary tumors and systemic disorders will be included. New imaging technology, especially for contrast-enhanced MRI and CT will be covered.

Working With Your Doctor: Getting the Healthcare You Deserve

By Nancy Keene, O'Reilly and Associates.

    ISBN: #1-56592-273-5a

This is a great book for anyone who is dealing with any doctor or healthcare professional but is especially useful for those of us with a "lifetime" thing that demands more regular or perhaps more specialized attention.

Topics covered include: finding the right doc, communicating your needs effectively, asking questions, researching, rights and responsibilities of both patient and physician, etc. (that's from the back jacket).

I found this easy to read and understand and very helpful. 'Nuf said!
