PBC's Vision Online June 2008 | | Points to Ponder Luke 15:3-7 is the parable of the lost sheep. In this parable, the shepherd with one hundred sheep leaves the ninety-nine sheep to go in search of the one sheep that has gone astray. When we think of these verses, we think of it as just applying to those who have not come to know Jesus as Savior, but I would like for us to see this parable another way. Suppose for a minute that the sheep refer to church members. The ninety-nine sheep would be those who are still coming to church. The one who has gone astray would be that member who has been hurt so badly at church that they would rather spend their Sundays at home watching tv church than to go to church and risk having their feelings hurt again or their reputation called into question. Following Jesus example in the parable, we would go and visit that member and try to heal the hurt. What if Jesus had taken the normal human approach? What if He had gotten angry at the sheep and said, "That sheep should not have gotten lost! It is his own fault he is lost, and he can deal with it! I have ninety-nine others here to care for, so why should I care. I do not need him anyway! When he decides that I am right, maybe he will find his way back with the rest of us or take up with another flock." What is our attitude toward not only the lost in sin, but the Christian who has lost his way in life? Are we following Christ's way, or the human side in all of us?
