The second Sunday of May each year is set aside as Mother's Day.

It is a day when we make a special effort

to show our appreciation and affection for our mothers.

And to return to her some of the love she has always shown us.

As Catholics, we know that we are blessed with two mothers:

The mother who gave birth to us here on earth

and who has loved and raised us.

And the Mother who adopted us

at the foot of the Cross,

Mary

who watches over us and intercedes for us

from her throne in Heaven.

" The most important person on earth is a mother.

She cannot claim the honor of having built the Notre Dame Cathedral.

She need not. She has built something more magnificent

than any cathedral

-- a dwelling for an immortal soul,

the tiny perfection of her baby's body.

"The angels have not been blessed with such a grace.

They cannot share in God's creative miracle

to bring new saints to Heaven.

Only a human mother can.

Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creatures.

God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation…

"What on God's good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother?"

~Joseph Cardinal Mindzenty

A Prayer for Mother's Day
Loving God,
as a mother gives life and nourishment
to her children,
so you watch over your Church.
Bless our mother.
Let the example of her faith and love shine forth.
Grant that we, her family,
may honor her always
with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer For a Mother With Child
O almighty and everlasting God, through the Holy Spirit,

you prepared the body and soul

of the glorious virgin Mary

to be a worthy dwelling place of your divine Son.

Through the same Holy Spirit, you sanctified St. John the Baptist,

while still in his mother's womb.

Hear the prayers of your humble servant who implores you,

through the intercession of St. Gerard,

to protect me amid the dangers of childbearing

and to watch over the child with which you blessed me.

May this child be cleansed by the saving water of baptism and,

after a Christian life on earth,

may we, both mother and child, attain everlasting bliss in heaven.

Amen.

For Mothers Who Allow Their Child to be Adopted

by Randy C. Moore

They laid the baby in her arms
She watched her new born son sleepin'
She bowed her head in silent prayer
To ask the Lord for his safe keepin'
You know his life has just begun
And sometimes it won't treat him fair
So be with him when I can't,
All I can give my little man
Is this mother's prayer

A mother's prayer can move a mountain
A mother's prayer is pure as gold
And the angels up in heaven,
Make sure she gets heard up there
Cause there's nothing that's more precious
To Gods ear than a mother's prayer

She tries her best to explain
As she holds his little hand
She says you're ment for better things
I hope that you can understand
Now all the papers have been signed
And your new home's waiting there
And one day they'll tell you soon,
How you were the answer to
Another mother's prayer

A mother's prayer can move a mountain
A mother's prayer is pure as gold
And the angels up in heaven,
Make sure she gets heard up there
Cause there's nothing that's more precious
To Gods ear than a mother's prayer

Dear Birth Mother

by Karen Ledbetter

You gave a gift,
A brand-new life,
Tiny and sweet,
A blessing indeed.

A baby girl,
Precious and small,
An answer to prayer,
No joy can compare.

No more empty arms,
I'm thrilled like no other.
You chose life and
Made me a mother.

Thank you so much
For this precious gift,
For being God's answer
to my prayers and tears.
