Adriana Ferrigno -- Director's Secretary 1981 -- 06-12-2001

A History of My Time with Qantas:-
When I joined QF in 1981, it was in the Chifley Square office in what was then called the "Personnel Department".  Some of you may remember the "big Cabin Crew strike" in 1980/81, which lasted for a few months.  As a result of that, QF set up a proper Industrial Relations Department and that is how I got my first job in the Company.  No, I wasn't one of the much maligned "Officers", I was the Director's Secretary!  I was in that job for four years when (luckily) I was "snapped up" by the Marketing Department, where I spent the best six years of my working life.  In the meantime, we had moved to the Qantas International Centre and the 27th Floor had the best views of the harbour!
When 1991 came around, I was working on the Management Floor in QIC and QF decided to sack 3,500 of its employees.  One of the first ones to go was my boss, the General Manager Marketing and that is where I got my first (and hopefully the last) taste of what it's like to be up for "redeployment".  I was in limbo for three months and then was finally placed in the Superannuation Department in Datec House (in George St., opposite QIC).  Just a little over a year later, we moved to Mascot on QCA7 and a few months after that, we were again dislodged to the Ground Floor of Airport Central.  I wish I had as many overseas trips as I had office moves during my 20 years in QF!!!  Just kidding, I had plenty of those too. ;-)
I had ten good years in the Superannuation Department.  With nearly 30,000 members to look after, our jobs were very hectic and above all interesting when it came to dealing personally with fellow QF staff.

My Time Since Qantas:-
My "life after QF" has been filled with the setting up of my own little business, Lingolinks Translations.  The variety of translation and interpreting jobs I have had during the year has been incredible.  I even got to work for QF again when they asked me to translate a speech to be given in Italy during the John Travolta campaign!  Funny how life weaves its wondrous and strange web.

Anne Dupen-Holland --  1966 -- 2001

I was also known as:-

A History of My Time with Qantas:-
I completed a 36-year career with Qantas in 2001.
I spent the first seven years in the BNE City Office, having started life at QF as a teletype operator.  In those days reservations were made by teletype to SYD RES.  After Qantam 1 came along teletype operators were no longer required, and I trained for Telephone Sales.
However, a radio strike in 1973 took me to the Airport "to help out". I never returned to the City Office and  thereafter my Airport career commenced.
My first position there was as a Ground Hostess, and as time went by I worked in Load Control, as a Passenger Supervisor and as a Ramp Supervisor.
Later, I joined the Airport Management ranks as the Ramp Manager, and thereafter was appointed as the Airport Manager. During this time lots of things happened at BNEAP, including the merger and the move to the new International Terminal.
My last position before retiring was as the Airport Manager London.
I loved every minute of it all!!!!!!!!!!

My Time Since Qantas:-
After retirement my husband, Peter, and I moved house.  We bought a lovely Queenslander home on 150 acres on the outskirts of the country town of Woodford, about 1.5 hours drive north-west of BNE.  For all those cabin crew and pilots who remember the Kilcoy reporting point, well our place is about a minute past it on the port side.  We often see the Flying Kangaroo flying past in the distance, fortunately at a height which keeps the silence of the bush intact.
We run about 30 head of cattle and have the usual menagerie of dogs, chooks etc.
Could not keep still after retirement so commenced volunteer work at the nearby Woodford Correctional Centre tutoring literacy and numeracy to inmates. For the last 12 months, I have been an employed teacher, working three days a week. This leaves me time to tend the cattle, do some craft work and generally enjoy country living.

John Keal -- Avionics Tech / Calibration Lab Technician 1965 -- 1981

I was also known as:-

You can Contact me here on Messenger or ICQ:-

A History of My Time with Qantas:-
I joined QANTAS in 1965 and went through the Apprenticeship training program. My work progressed from Radar system and communications into Metrology (Measurement Science), or Calibration, and saw the introduction of the first 747 aircraft. Training took me to various overseas locations and academics moved through the Engineering Certificate course. Marriage in 1976 and a new family, living in Penshurst N.S.W. experienced many changes at Mascot including the new R.O.S. facilities, deregulation and fleet changes. This all rounded out my career with the company and by 1980 was looking to expand my horizons and we decided to move overseas. March 1981 and some industrial unrest saw my last days with the company.

My Time Since Qantas:-
1981 Saw us move to the U.S.A. and accepted a position with the R.C.A. company in Moorestown N.J. in the measurement laboratory. I then accepteda position as a Methods Engineer and took on the Production support systems work for the Navy radar manufacturing operations. The company went through a period of mergers and we became Lockheed Martin. 4 years ago I accepted an offer to move into Software engineering and have since been promoted to the position of Senior Software Quality Eng. Ellen and I have been married for 29 years now and we live in Southampton Pennsylvania. Our four children have all grown up. The eldest daughter graduated with a Bsc. and is a management professional, my eldest son graduated with a Ba., is Microsoft certified and works for an ISP provider. My youngest daughter has a Ba. and works as a Pharmacutical Technician. The youngest son is about to graduate. We still fly QANTAS when we visit our family in N.Z. and When Dad turns 90 this Fall (spring in Oz) , we will be on a Longreach to AKL for the big party.
Cheers,
John

Les Johnston -- Senior Traffic Officer (Customer Services) 1959 -- 1983

I was also known as:-

Brown Owl

A History of My Time with Qantas:-
Originally from Edinburgh I migrated to Australia in1956, settled in Sydney and worked for David Jones before joining Qantas in 1959 in the Traffic department as it was known then. after approximately seven months initially working at the old International terminal (the one with te leaky roof) I was posted to Darwin fort a two year period .Operations through Darwin were mostly between 2100hrs through to 0600 and besides Qantas we handled BOAC, Air India, KLM, Cathay Pacific, TAI, and all the freighters of companies such as Flying Tigers and DanAir in addition to migrant charter flights operated by many European companies. Memories of my time in Darwin include the flight delayed due to mechanical problems where passengers were taken on a bus tour with the exception of VIP passenger, film director, Alfred Hitchcock. Management decided that Mr. Hitchcock be given something special. A tour "down the track" to a place called Berry Springs. A company car and driver was organised along with a special picnic lunch pack and, to my surprise, I was delegated to chaperone Alfred Hitchcock on the trip. He was a most interesting travel companion and, although disappointed he did not see anyn crocodiles in the wild he thoroughly enjoyed his day out.as did I and the lunch pack with chicken and a cold bottle of wine also went down very well.
I returned to Sydney and worked as one of three 'senior officers departures' or SODS as we were called. This was followed by work on the ramp overseeing the loading of cargo, mail and baggage. Then came a move to load sheets before being appointed as Flight Traffic Officer. FTO's only operated on the Kangaroo route where they were a sort of combined loadmaster and purser. In the 1960s there seemed to be a huge number of 'personalities' amongst both cabin and tech. crews. Those of us who worked with them will never forget ''Evil Ned", who had little stickers made with "EVIL NED WAS HERE' written on them. These were eventually found in the most unlikely places. Even in the ladies toilet in Windsor Castle!. In those days, in London, the crew stayed near Heathrow at Fortes Exelcior Hotel and the favourite watering hole was a nearby pub, "The Air Hostess" which was known to the crews as "The Marge D'Tracey". It was there that a Navigator, 'Narker 'Brown introduced me to a very potent local potion, Barley Wine. This seemed more like a mixture of sump oil and methylated spirits but Narker would enjoy a pint before partaking of the pub's "Ham Special" at two and sixpence for his lunch.
In 1965 the era of FTOs came to an end and I happened to be the one who operated the last sector which  HKG/BNE/SYD. Returning to be based at Mascot it wasn't long before I was on the move again. This time it was a two year posting ( it turned out to be nearly three years) to Nadi, Fijii as Traffic Training Officer. The Fijiian authorities had decided that, instead of Qantas staff from Sydney, locals should be given the opportunity of running the Traffic department. Thus it was that, based in Lautoka, I travelled to Nadi airport to take on the task of training local staff in all aspects of passenger handling. I remained in Fijii until mid 1968 when I returned to Sydney and eventually worked in "Airport Systems" in the team assigned to prepare the ground handling requirements for the advent of the Boeing 747. In 1972 it was back to the International Terminal and the interline transfer desk. Traffic as such became defunct and now we were to be known as  Customer Service Agents. A spell as a 'Redcoat' followed and this included a short posting to HKG as one of a two man team sent to work with our handling agents, Cathay Pacific, who were experiencing some problems at that time. Return to Sydney again until I took VR in 1983.

My Time Since Qantas:-
Leaving Qantas I soon got tired of being a "gentleman of leisure" and I got myself a part time job on the reception desk at my local ( Dee Why)  RSL Club. Meanwhile my wife and I had been spending regular weeks on the Gold Coast and we had several friends resident there. In 1995 we had a long discussion the result of which was the decision to sell up at Dee Why and move North. This happened in August of that year and we bought a house on the Northern end of the Gold Coast in Runaway Bay.  Unfortunately in 1998 I had to undergo a quadruple bypass operation (That's what smoking and the good life does for you!) and having to curtail some of my more active interests I have returned to my life long love affair with the music of the Big Band era, the 1930s to 1950s. I now spend a lot of time on my large collection of records, audio cassettes and CDs. Getting into the world of computers I renewed contact with musician friends in the UK some of whom were in the British bands of Ted Heath, Joe Loss and who are still actively working in London in various TV shows and in recording studios. Before coming to Australia I had been very much involved in the music scene in Edinburgh and was a founder member of the Edinburgh Rhythm Club. This had given me access to the big bands who played concerts and dances and I made many friends in the business. I am currently a member of several groups devoted to the music of the 1930s to the 1950s and I spend much of my time researching and writing items for contacts mainly in England. Other than that I am also in contact with colleaagues with whom I used to work in Qantas and I do the usual things about the house such as a bit of gardening and DIY fixing things. Not very well I might add!
Now that I've found this site with all it's Qantas context I have got something new to hold my interest.

A History of My Time with Qantas:-
I joined the Old Telecommunications Centre which was situated on the 1st floor of Qantas House - Chifley Square - alongside reservations in 1964.
Communications being handled in those days by Teleprinter and Tape Relay.
When Qf eventually installed computers to handle the 'switching' of its telecommunications traffic I was trained by QF in this new capacity.
As the computers 'grew' so did my knowledge.  I eventually moved down to the celebrated 'Hole' - some 6 floors underground at the new Qantas Building to what became known as Qantam.
There I worked in Network Control and then eventually in the 'Support Centre' - being one of its earliest members.

My Time Since Qantas:-
I loved my life in QF... hated leaving...but now happily retired on the beautiful GOLD COAST.
I am currently gainfully employed (but not being paid) doing voluntary work with a much neglected charity.
Like the saying goes,  I get much more out of it than what I put into it.
