 | There are seven major branches of Yoga: - Rāja-Yoga (the royal path of meditation)
- Karma-Yoga (the path of self-transcending action)
- Bhakti-Yoga (the path of devotion)
- Jnāna-Yoga (the path of wisdom)
- Laya-Yoga (the path of Kundalini awakening)
- Mantra-Yoga (the path of transformative sound)
- Hatha-Yoga (the forceful path of physical self-transformation)
| Tantra Yoga, also called Maha Yoga (the Great Yoga), is a combination of five of the major Yogas: Mantra Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga, Laya Yoga, and Raja Yoga. Mantra Yoga is the repetition of a mantra or seed sound (bija mantra). A mantra is a sacred sound or combination of sounds chanted during meditation that resonate within the body and the chakras, and is meant to evoke the release of specific energies. The mantra enables our consciousness to become free from worldly thoughts and go into a state of concentration. By the power of sound inherent in a mantra the mind becomes controlled and concentration becomes well established. Hatha Yoga is one form of yoga that emphasizes physical postures (asanas) and breath control (pranayama) for increased health and awareness. A body thus trained does not present any obstacles to the state of concentration or meditation which leads to enlightenment (samadhi). Karma Yoga is the path of service, and none of us can escape this pathway. The principle of karma yoga is that what we experience today is created by our actions in the past. Being aware of this, all of our present efforts become a way to consciously create a future that frees us from being bound by negativity and selfishness. Karma is the path of self-transcending action. We practice karma yoga whenever we perform our work and live our lives in a selfless fashion and as a way to serve others.  Laya Yoga, also called Kundalini Yoga, is a mystical form of yoga centered around awakening and employing the Kundalini energy, an energy force in the body that lies dormant at the base of the spine but can be awakened. When awakened, it travels up the spine through the chakras to the crown of the head where it can effect spiritual changes such as enlightenment. It is the energy of self-actualization. Tantra uses Kundalini Yoga to harness the mental, physical and nervous energies of the body and puts them under the domain of the will, which is the instrument of the Soul.
Raja Yoga, also called the royal path of Yoga, emphasizes techniques for controlling both mind and body. These techniques include exercises, breathing and relaxation techniques, and meditation. It aims at purifying the consciousness to the highest degree and transforming it into the state of super-conscious concentration, with the final intention being for this super-purified and super-illuminated consciousness to become completely absorbed into supreme consciousness, thus experiencing a state of utter bliss. All five of these Yogas are a part of Tantra Yoga, and each in their own way approaches the same goal. When all five are combined and the Tantric yogi selects from each system what s/he needs, they are practicing Maha Yoga.
