Circle of Friends
Starring Minnie Driver.
It is about friendship and Struggles, and Sex Recommended by Maddy , 10/28/2006.
I Went Down
Starring Brendan Gleeson, Peter McDonald.
Simply the best Irish film ever. What the Coen brothers would make if they were from Cork.
Recommended by John D. , 9/20/2001.
Intermission
Starring Cillian Murphy, Colm Meaney, Colin Farrell, Kelly Macdonald.
Brilliant comedy crime drama romance set in Dublin. Clannad had it coming...
Recommended by John D. , 2/19/2004.
Southpaw
Starring Francis Barrett and Chick Gillen - Documentary.
This film covers two years in the life of of light-welterweight boxer Francis Barrett from Galway who, as a Traveler, overcame incredible prejudice and discrimination to become the hero of Galway. Barrett lived with 16 other members of his family in a ramshackle grouping of caravans without electricity or running water on the outskirts of the city. Four-time Irish champion, Barret represented Ireland at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, GA and drew the honor of carrying the flag of the Republic in the Opening Ceremonies. Though he lost in his second fight, Barrett returned to Ireland as the pride of Galway. He married his sweetheart of four years, Kathleen McDonagh, and the two moved to London to live with her parents. While in London, Barrett joins the Trojan Boxing Club and attempts to win both the Irish and British championships. Barrett loses in in the Irish semi-finals but goes on to become the British champion...the first from the province of Connaught to do so.
The film focuses on Barrett and his trainer, Chick Gillen, himself a former boxer and a local barber. Slow and poorly shot in many places, the film still manages to fairly represent the obstacles that Barrett had to overcome and the pride he took in representing Galway to the world.

Great black comedy by Neil Jordan. Probably his best film.

A great comedy, shot in the little village of Kilvara in Donegal Co. Your love one might be closer than what you think.

The Commitments
Starring Robert Arkins, Andrew Strong,Johnny Strong, Maria Doyle, Angeline Ball Colm Meaney, Andrea Corr and many more.
This movie may be all "soul" rather than Irish music, but is excellent nonetheless and shows Irish humor at it's best even in the midst of poverty. Some of the one liners will have you on the floor laughing and though I doubt the sequel I hear is coming can be AS good, it's got to be worth watching. Andrew Strong's amazing vocal's, even when drunk, are top notch!
The movie is based on the first of a trilogy by author Roddy Doyle. I anxiously await the next release!

The Field
Starring Richard Harris, Sean Bean, Brenda Fricker, John Hurt, Sean McGinley.
Adaptation of John B. Keane's classic stage play. The Bull McCabe is just a little too accurate a portrayal of some of Ireland's farmers, even today. Recommended by John D. , 5/15/2002.
The General
Starring Brendan Gleeson, Jon Voight, Adrian Dunbar, Sean McGinley, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Angeline Ball.
True story, based on the life of Martin Cahill.

The Most Fertile Man in Ireland
Starring Kris Marshall, Bronagh Gallagher, James Nesbitt, Olivia Nash.
Fairly amusing sex comedy set in Belfast. Some great performances by the mainstays of Northern Irish drama. Recommended by John D. , 1/27/2003.
The Quiet Man
Starring John Wayne.
Yes, it's old, yes, it's corny, and yes, it has some of the worst 'Oirish' accents known to man - but it's still a classic. Good preparation fora touristy trip to Ireland, as it seems to have been filmed all over the place - but mostly in Galway and Mayo, where there are still pubs and gift shops making a living from the film's legacy. Watch out for the beach where the horse race takes place - it's just down the road from me!

The Wind That Shakes the Barley
Starring Cillian Murphy.
The War of Independence and Civil War from a socialist perspective. Powerful stuff, and winner of the
Palme d'Or
at Cannes. Recommended by John D. , 10/28/2006.
This Is My Father
Starring Aiden Quinn, James Caan.
Written by Paul Quinn over a 10 year period, First collaberation by all three Quinn brothers. Story of a man seeking his Irish father's identity. Very moving!

Waking Ned [Devine]
Starring Ian Bannen and David Kelly.
This is a disarmingly original comic fable about the true meaning of true fortune. As bracing as a shot of Irish whiskey and as rollicking as the wild Irish sea, Waking Ned Divine invites us into the enchanting village of Tulaigh Morh, population 52, and shrinking.
