Left behind were some of their dogs for which work was provided since cattle raising and agriculture remained the prime occupations. It was about 700 A.D. that a Christian church was built where formerly had stood the Roman Baths. As excavation began, the red tiles of former Roman villas came to light, and thus the city was named Rottweil, suggested by the appearance of these red tiles. Calm, confident and courageous, the Roman drover dogs became known as the butchers dogs of Rottweil, herding cattle and sheep to market, then watching over his owner until safely home. As to the breed characteristics and history, much was lost to time, but the integrity of the breeds beauty and working ability has remained unchanged. Ever the faithful companion, this breed requires a firm hand and dedicated owners. Socialization and proper care ensure this breed will continue to serve man well for centuries to come.
